Anaconda: good work!
by Dimi Paun
Hi Jeremy,
Just wanted to share a few thoughts about anaconda,
while fresh in my mind (I've managed to install FC5
last night).
First impression: anaconda really rocks! This is a
very solid, pleasant installer.
I do have a few _minor_ points that I think would
make it a bit nicer to use:
* PASS/FAIL color coding
When testing disks, there's nothing in the way
of visual feedback between the PASS/FAIL screens
(I haven't actually seen the FAIL screen :), but
I assume it hasn't changed since FC4)
This is a screen that I tend to dismiss quickly,
and I'm left with that nagging feeling that I didn't
read the text right. A green/red background just for
the word PASS/FAIL will help immensely.
* The text based boot is ugly
Rather minor point, but a graphical initial boot
would make for a less intimidating experience in
this otherwise flawless graphical installer.
* Disk change indicators
Not sure it's worth the trouble, but it would be
really nice if we got some ticks along the progress
bar on when we can expect we will need to change
the CDs. This would also tell someone which CDs are
needed. It would help people a lot to manage their
time during installs.
* Links don't work in Release Notes
Rather frustrating, considering the size of the doc.
Links within the document should work, if they
look like regular links (color, cursor)
* External links in Release Notes are confusing
These can't possibly work, it would be nice if we
can disable them to avoid confusion.
* Space does not page down in Release Notes
I am so used to use space to page down in viewers,
I really miss it when I can not do so.
* Release Notes too big?
I found them to be too big/verbose, especially for
a light read during install. But maybe it's just me.
Hope this helps, and thank you again for the excellent installer.

If anyone needs a pre-release version of metacity with configurable new
window focus I have it here:

FC5 test3 udev hang
by Gianluca Sforna
Hi,
I just put my hands an a shiny Acer Travelmate 8202WLMi laptop so I
decided to give a try to FC5. The installation wen fine, but upon
first reboot I an stuck at:
Starting udev:_
Admittedly, I did _not_ expected FC to work fine on that, having a
bunch of fancy new hardware in there ( Centrino Core Duo, wifi
ipw3945ABG, SATA HD and so on ), so this is just for the records.
If someone also has an idea on how to get it booting, I could try to
upgrade the beast so I can see if newer packages fixes the problem.
Thanks a lot

Hi,
Any chance of a repo being set up for the very early testing version of
OOo x86_64?

Known issues with nForce4-4x chipset and recent kernels?
by Matthias Saou
Hi,
I've just tried to update the hardware I had in a machine, updating at the
same time the system from FC3 to FC5/dev. What I did was prepare an FC5
installation on the final hard drive, but in a temporary machine, then
planned on simply fixing up the initrd for the final one and putting the
disk in. But it wasn't that easy...
Once I got the final machine ready, a Sempron 2800+ on an Asus K8N4-E
Deluxe motherboard (pretty neat and not too expensive), which is based on
an nForce4-4x chipset, I could boot fine off the old parallel ata drive
with FC3 in single user mode, then even mount the new serial ata drive
which was recognized fine.
I thought it would be a piece of cake from here, since I just added the
sata_nv to the initrd and rebooted...
But it turns out, after fighting for a long while thinking it was an
initrd problem, that even the FC5 installation booted from DVD doesn't see
the serial ata drive, although it loads the sata_nv module. After loading
the module, nothing special in dmesg apart from some selinux related
stuff.
After hours of fiddling, trying to add a sleep delay after the sata_nv
modprobe in the inirtd (I saw a post somewhere about a race condition at
some point), I simply gave up. I brought a newer parallel ata to put into
the machine, and booting for the even older one where FC3 is installed, I
managed to copy over the install from the serial ata drive to the new
parallel ata one. BUT...
To my great surprise, I got into a very similar situation, where the
kernel wouldn't boot. Hmmm. So I tried once more simply starting an FC5
installation from the DVD, and same thing, when the kernel displays "hda:"
and seems to be trying to read the partition layout to display "hda1
hda2", I get messages about DMA timeouts.
Note that at that point, simply switching the boot device in the BIOS to
the old parallel ata drive and booting FC3, I can mount all three drives
and they work perfectly. So it doesn't seem to be a cabling problem or a
BIOS problem.
The only explanation I currently have is that 2.6.15 and 2.6.16 kernels
have a problem with this motherboard, as I've tried both the original FC5
kernel and the latest one from FC5 testing updates.
I've also tried the "noprobe" install option, booting with "noapic", but
I've run out of ideas....
Does anyone know about any issues with nForce4-4x chipsets currently? I've
been searching google for hours and found nothing at all.
Matthias

PHP-5 seems to be screwed on FC-5
by casimiro barreto
Hello,
Yesterday I updated one of my servers to FC-5. The primary effect sensed
was that PHP-5 seems to be broken. Oh... yeah... it works up to a
certain point but, after that, it miserably fails.
For instance, I have a ridiculous program that count hits. It stopped
working. Not only a single f_ck_g error message or warning in the
logs... I have an schedule program that works with MySQL and now it is
simply unable to deal with ISO-8859-1 encoding... Oh... by the way...
also refuses to work properly in UTF-8 (not that suported by MySQL
itself) and other oddities... But as ALL UNIVERSE speaks English, why to
bother with those who don't...
In both cases I have very little evidence of what is going on (really
very little)... For instance... $_SEVER['ALL_HTTP'] (quite standard in
PHP-5) issues error messages and little nasty things like that.
[root@sol httpd]# cat error_log

Since pre-compiled versions of PHP are not to be found on Zend (I guess
they got tired of things workin in one hour and not workin the next), I
think it is a good thing that Fedora developers take care about what was
working and will stop to work on next release... Including explicit
mechanisms for downgrading...
Besides, I fixed the problems with device drivers (USB and SOUND) on
FC5. Just rebuilding all the kernel (about a 2 hour work)... after all,
ASUS being so minor motherboard manufacturer, who in the Universe would
give a heck if Linux don't work in boxes that use ASUS, Pentium 4 and
SIS chipsets.
Besides, RAID1 is still crashing. The same with RAID0 and linear. With
SATA HDDs. Perhaps better thing to do is to spend some thousand US$
purchasing an external raid... since it is almost impossible to fix
something that simply locks the sistem (much like M$) without leaving a
single trace of what the hell happened.
Regards,
Casimiro
PS: I am not one of those ass-kisses that keeps congratulating for next
versions... Next versions MUST work all right to deserve congratulation.
Otherwise it will wind up just like other technological toys that
enjoyed college students.

strange X11 Problems with cisco vpn client under Fedora 4 or 5
by Jörn Rink
Hi,
first of all, sry when this is not the right mailing list.
I have problems with the cisco vpnclient 4.xxx under Fedora 4 or 5.
The client works perfectly, but when it is started and i login with a
user into X11, after a while the mouse pointer stacks at the left side.
This happens ONLY when the cisco vpn client is connected with my
office.
So my question is, how can this happen, where can i look or debug
to get more info? I have to reboot the computer, deleting modules
restarting X do not work.
Anyone here with the same Problem? On my notebook with Fedora Core 3 i
do not have this problem.
Thanks for reading,
Joern Rink
