Where Do I Debug Issues With An App Packaged By Fedora?
by Tim Spaulding
I'm an engineer and a user of Fedora. I've used Fedora at work for years now. Recently, I've run
into some problems using Evolution with our corporate exchange server. Figuring this was my
chance to get involved with the community, I started digging into the Fedora and Gnome projects
trying to figure out how to proceed. The big question I have is: Which project should I start
with?
Fedora packages Evolution, but as I understand it, doesn't really add anything to its development
other than bug reports and some fixes. Would it be more appropriate to start by installing the
development versions of Evolution from Gnome? Should I start by installing from rawhide?
How do you make a decision about where to start debugging? Also, I'd love to hear anyone's
strategies with debugging a specific application on Fedora without disrupting the rest of the
machine.
Thanks,
tims

Problem setting up IP MASQUERADE with recent kernels
by Joseph Sacco
Problem
-------
With recent 2.6.21.x kernels IP-Masquerading, required by
Mac-On-Linux, has stopped working as expected.
Question
--------
Has anyone successfully set up IP Masquerading using a recent
kernel?
Discussion
----------
Mac-On-Linux
http://sourceforge.net/projects/mac-on-linux/
is a Linux/PPC program that virtualizes MacOS or MacOSX in Linux. MOL
uses an IP tunnel to eastabish communications between the Linux host and
the virtualized MAC operating system.
-Ethernet----------------------------------------
| |
130.237.226.234 | 130.237.226.239
eth0 | other_machine
linux
tun1 |
192.168.41.1 |
| virtual
+--- ip-tunnel ------- MOL
192.168.41.2
The Linux host performs network address translation to enable MOL to
communicate with the external network.
The mechanisms used by Mac-On-Linux to set up the IP tunnel and set up
NAT have worked successfully with 2.4.x and 2.6.x series kernels until
recently. Mac-on-Linux networking works correctly when run on FC6. It
has also run on fedora/rawhide with earlier 2.6.20.x kernels.
Two thoughts come to mind:
* a kernel module has gone missing ==> kernel configuration
problem
* "something has changed" with how IP-Masquerading is setup /
works.
I have examined the kernel configuration file for IPV4 netfiltering and
have not found any obvious omissions. [That does not mean that there are
no omissions of required modules. It just means I did not spot them.]
The only "suspect" is CONN_NF_CONNTRACK_PROC_COMPAT.
What appears to be happening with the latest kernels is some necessary
kernel modules are not being loaded initially.
Consider the output from 'lsmod' from two successive attempts of
starting Mac-On-Linux:
Attempt #1
----------
Mac-On-Linux comes up. Networking is borked.
[output from ldmod]
Module Size Used by
nf_nat 20660 0
nf_conntrack_ipv4 13448 1
nf_conntrack 73408 2 nf_nat,nf_conntrack_ipv4

ip_tables 14900 0
x_tables 18404 1 ip_tables
tun 13728 1
mol 59304 1
Conspicuously absent from this list are
* iptable_nat
* ipt_MASQUERADE
Running 'dmesg' may provide a hint:
[output from dmesg]

Hmmmm... "can't setup rules." There it is again. Wonder what's going on.
Thoughts???

50% speed penalty for LVM on mdraid
by Andy Burns
I have an F7/rawhide machine with 6x400GB SATA II disks all
partitioned as 100MB + 399.9GB
/boot is on /dev/sda1 (would be RAID1 across /dev/sd[abc]1 partitions
except for mkinitrd raid1.ko breakage) with /dev/md1 as RAID5 on
/dev/sd[abcdef]2
Then a single LVM vg00 on top of /dev/md1
root and swap as LVs within vg00 and plenty of spare space.
Doing some timings of the various block devices (so far just roughly
with hdparm, bonnie installed for more detail later). Results of
"hdparm -Tt" averaged over a few runs, showing cached and buffered
speeds
/dev/sda1 gives 1995MB/s and 72MB/s which seems quite good for a single spindle
/dev/md1 gives 2040MB/s and 260MB/s also fairly good (I had hoped with
six spindles and parity to get closer to 5x performance than 3.5x)
/dev/mapper/vg00-lv01 (my root fs) gives 2100MB/s and 135MB/s which is
a little disappointing
Nearly a 50% speed penalty seems a heavy price to pay for LVM, is
there any slow debug code currently in rawhide that might explain it?
Could I have some bad choices of block sizes between RAID/LVM layers
which are reducing throughput by splitting reads? Anything else?

I have 2 comments about this:
- Should yum complain about this, like putting failed instead of
complete? (first time i didn't notice the update failed)
- I think the problem is because in the tcl specfile there is:
mkdir -p $RPM_BUILD_ROOT/%{_prefix}/lib
ln -s %{_datadir}/%{name}%{majorver} $RPM_BUILD_ROOT/%{_libdir}/%{name}%{majorver}
the top line should have libdir too of course. If this is the problem, why doesn't the build fail instead of failing on install time?

repoview in our repositories
by Michael Schwendt
I believe the repoview pages in the Extras repository still cause some
mirrors to choke on mirroring many hundreds to thousands of regenerated
html files all few days:
extras-tree$ find . -name \*.html|wc -l
61450
That's how many html pages are in Extras 5+6+devel presently!
The reason is that although repoview doesn't need to create all its web
pages from scratch, it changes many of them too often due to the many
package versions in them, which point to adjacent packages.
For example:
http://wftp.tu-chemnitz.de/pub/linux/fedora-core-extras/development/i386/...
The navigation bar at the left contains links to 20 packages, which come
before and after "yap-devel" in the alphabetically sorted list of package
names. It links to web page file names, which contain not only the package
name, but also version and release. Changing any of the 20 packages
changes the web pages for all its neighbours. Plus, the navigation bar
lists not only the latest package release, but all releases (which is by
design) found in the repo metadata, although it hides the version-release
and causes confusion.
The more often packages in the neighbourhood of one package are changed,
added or removed, the more web pages are updated due to the heavy use of
package versions in them. Even deleting an old package release triggers
such a rebuild of a chain of web pages.
IMO, we would do better in the short-term if we modified repoview to
simplify the web page file names to just "%{name}.html". Then a package
page would only be updated if the package changed actually or if
the list of its 19 neighbours changed.
What is the estimated popularity of the repoview pages on our master
download site and on the mirrors? Perhaps there are even plans on
making a public interface to the package database obsolete repoview?
