Subject: [smc-discuss] Re: Fwd: Terminal emulator supporting Indic
scripts like {kn, hi, pa}_IN.utf-8
To: smc-discuss(a)googlegroups.com
Hi,
Emacs' malayalam rendering is based on xft and libm17n-flt and
libotf. So the support is on X enabled emacs. So running emacs in
gnome-terminal won't give malayalam rendering. But running M-x shell or
M-x eshell (M-x => Alt-x) inside emacs can give you a
malayalam enabled shell. You probably have to compile the CVS especially
with libotf and libm17n-flt enabled. It is emacs' general rendering that
is enhanced with these improvements, So it works for every other modes
on emacs too.. be it gnus, erc..anything..
Also it seems rendering of other indic scripts also have enhanced with
the m17n improvement.
http://suruma.freeflux.net/blog/archive/2008/10/15/malayalam-in-emacs.html
That have the details. iirc ./configure options has some corrections
there it seems...

OpenFWWF and Fedora (please look at the review request...)
by Richard Hughes
I've recently obtained a Dell Mini 10, which comes with the BCM4312
LP-PHY. Now, I know it can't work until the LP stuff is worked out,
but instead I've been looking at the firmware situation.
I knew the firmware was non-free. I didn't know there was a free
re-implementation called OpenFWWF. So, yum search OpenFWWF. This
turned up nothing. Google was more helpful. A package, waiting to be
reviewed for Fedora (with no comment) for over three months. This made
me sad.
The bug is here: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=490892
I've not got the legal or technical understanding to approve or reject
this, so help wanted. I'm offering beer as a reward.
Thanks,
Richard.

Fwd: update mechanism for new releases

Lot's of people will tell you that it works fine. However, this is not
a supported path for upgrade. Users should use Pre-Upgrade instead.
See:

You can configure yum to not update its cache that often with the «
metadata_expire » directive in /etc/yum.conf

RPM has seen a lot of improvements in speed and memory consumption
lately. My XO (a build from the latest G1G1 in Europe that I never
updated yet) has RPM 4.4.2. Panu Matilain has just posted about that,
comparing the performances of RPM from 4.4.2 (Fedora 9) to 4.7 (Fedora
11). Perfect timing :)
=> http://laiskiainen.org/blog/?p=19
Yum has also been improved. Not sure those improvements would be
enough, but I bet the situation in Fedora 11 is already much better
than it was in the previous OLPC builds from Fedora 9.

You can use the « keepcache » directive in /etc/yum.conf which AFAIU
aims exactly at that. From « man yum.conf » :
keepcache
Either ‘1’ or ‘0’. Determines whether or not yum keeps the cache
of headers and packages after successful installation. Default
is ’1’ (keep files)
What other customizations are you expecting ?

Yum will ask the user if he wants to import the key and trust it on
first use. Wouldn't that be enough for signing keys ? Couldn't Quanta
manufacture the laptops with those GPG keys bundled too ?

Backup with a School Server ?

Building firefox
by Paul F. Johnson
Hi,
For some reason, firefox has become really unstable on the likes of eBay
and facebook (it crashes out after clicking on the login button). It
looks like it could be either a gcj issue or xulrunner.
I've tried to rebuild from the srpm, it built, but then when I try to
install I get
Error unpacking rpm package firefox-3.5-0.22.beta4.fc12.i586
error : unpacking of archive failed on
file /usr/lib/firefox-3.5b4/firefox;4a4615d6 : cpio : Digest mismatch
firefox-3.5-0.22.beta4.fc12.i586 was supposed to be removed but is not!
I've never come across this before and am wondering if there is some
sort of magic required to build firefox or if there is something else
going on.
Any chance of a real rebuild please?
TTFN
Paul

Rawhide debuginfo packages with no sources
by Ville Skyttä
Hello,
Quite a few packages that produce *-debuginfo without sources have crept again
in rawhide. See https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging/Debuginfo for
possible reasons, the most usual of which in my (past, haven't checked this
batch that closely) experience is failure to honor $RPM_OPT_FLAGS during build
which can also mean that the default security related compiler flags aren't
being applied either.
List of such packages identified by my debuginfo-check.py is attached
(ownership info generated with Thorsten's fedoradev-pkgowners). I intend to
submit debuginfo-check.py to yum-utils (probably as debugrepo-check) and have
added a similar check in upstream svn rpmlint, hopefully with these additions
people will start noticing the issues easier.

yum 3.2.23 more than 10x slower than 3.2.21?!
by Roberto Ragusa
Hi,
yum got really slower a few days ago on F10, so I investigated and found that:
(3.2.23) #yum list updates
real 1m28.446s
user 1m24.553s
sys 0m0.546s
(3.2.21) #yum list updates
real 0m7.621s
user 0m6.673s
sys 0m0.390s
this is with a few repositories, no net access, no disk access (everything
is cached), trivially reproduceable. No yum plugins (just downloadonly), no
PackageKit installed.
About 90 seconds of 100% CPU (2.4GHz Core 2) is a disaster.
What the ${REPLACE_WITH_RUDE_WORD} is it the new version doing?
Is it raytracing something in background? :-)
A quick strace of the process appeared to be read()ing a lot of stuff
and gettimeofday()ing a lot.

Can someone else reproduce this?
I'm not an expert at profiling python.
Best regards.

Odd omission for qt4-devel package
by Neal Gompa
I found a very strange omission for the qt4-devel package. The path to
qt4-devel binaries (/usr/lib/qt4/bin) isn't automatically added to $PATH
like qt3's are.
Additionally, when I removed the qt3-devel package, the path to qt3-devel
binaries (/usr/lib/qt-3.3/bin) isn't automatically removed from the $PATH.
Shouldn't these be fixed?
