Packaging Committee Meeting Summary (2010-02-03)
by Toshio Kuratomi
Commitee members present
abadger1999
hansg
tibbs
racor
rdieter
SmootherFrOgZ
Committee members absent
rathann
limburgher (technical difficulties)
spot (parental duties)
We approved two guidelines:
SRPM Buildtime macros https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/SRPM_Buildtime_macros
For: 5 hansg, SmootherFrOgZ, tibbs, abadger1999, rdieter
Against: 0
Emphasize correct SF.net SourceURL
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/PackagingDrafts/SourceURL_sourceforge_down...
For: 5 hansg, rdieter, abadger1999, SmootherFrOgZ, tibbs
Against: 0
These now go to FESCo for approval.
The committee also voted to recommend no exception for some of the libraries
that wordpress bundles to fesco (the ones that are not heavily modified).
Committee will discuss what qualifies as a "functionally modified" version
of a library and whether that's acceptable this week on the packaging
mailing list and at next week's meeting.
"Recommend no exception for the list of non-heavily modified libraries"
For: 5 abadger1999, rdieter, tibbs, racor, SmootherFrOgZ
Against/abstain: 1 hansg had to leave before the vote was announced but while
present he semed to favour grandfathering in non-heavily modified
libraries that are not already packaged for Fedora.
The committee started voting on new Guidelines for python modules that
includes Guidelines for python3 but suffered network difficulties in the
middle of the discussion. This will ocntinue on the packaging mailing list
and hopefully be voted on later this week.
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/PackagingDrafts/Python3
Current state:
For: 3 rdieter, tibbs, abadger1999
Against: 1 racor racor wants to have a note in the guidelines of when the
python-2.x package will be removed from Fedora. Other committee members
argued that this was 1) out of scope for the FPC (would be a packagr or
FESCo decision) and 2) impossible to know at this juncture as the uptake
of python3 among module authors is not yet very high -- that leads to no
one being able to port because their dependencies have not been ported.

For content you wish to be in Fedora 13, you will need to use the F-13
branch when it shows up, yes.

Next privilege escalation policy draft
by Adam Williamson
Hi again, folks. Here is another draft of the privilege escalation
policy. This is the sixth draft (second to this list). Changes: one of
Kevin Kofler's queries alerted me to the fact that somehow all the
changes between draft 1 and draft 2 were lost from drafts 3 onwards,
d'oh :) They are restored, which addresses some points people raised
here that were previously raised and addressed on test list. I also
tried to clarify some more that the planned system whereby there'll be
an 'administrative users' group that the first account gets added to
automatically and to which other users can be added manually is OK, and
clarified the point KK misunderstood about what constitutes a 'policy
escalation mechanism'.
again, comments are welcome! This is probably going to FESco next week,
not tomorrow, apparently they have a heavy schedule tomorrow.

Are there big block device regressions or changes in rawhide kernel?
by Richard W.M. Jones
I'm seeing very strange problems in Rawhide at the moment where a
guest kernel (running under qemu) gets stacks of block device errors.
These occur under both IDE and virtio. The block device is backed
with a plain file on the host, so obviously no real error should be
occurring.
It's confusing that it happens with both IDE (ie. libata) and virtio.
Here is the kernel output on boot. The guest has 4 block devices
attached, and as I said above they are just plain empty files on the
host side.
Seems to be a very recent change (< 5 days ago). Any ideas?
Rich.

kernel-2.6.33-0.40.rc7.git0.fc13
--------------------------------
* Sat Feb 06 2010 Kyle McMartin <kyle(a)redhat.com>
- Don't want linux-firmware if 0, yet. (Think F-11/F-12 2.6.33)
* Sat Feb 06 2010 Kyle McMartin <kyle(a)redhat.com>
- Hack around delay loading microcode.ko, on intel, we don't split out
the firmware into cpuid specific versions (in fact, I don't know who does...)
so just patch out the request_firmware calls in microcode_intel.c, and
microcode_ctl.init will do the right thing. (fixes rhbz#560031)
(side note: I'll fix microcode_ctl to do one better at some point.)
* Sat Feb 06 2010 Kyle McMartin <kyle(a)redhat.com>

* Sat Feb 06 2010 Kyle McMartin <kyle(a)redhat.com> 2.6.33-0.36.rc7.git0

* Sat Feb 06 2010 Kyle McMartin <kyle(a)redhat.com>
- git-bluetooth.patch: selection of backports from next for hadess.
(rhbz#562245)
* Sat Feb 06 2010 Kyle McMartin <kyle(a)redhat.com>
- virt_console-rollup.patch, for feature F13/VirtioSerial, patches
are all targetted at 2.6.34 (and in linux-next.)
* Sat Feb 06 2010 Kyle McMartin <kyle(a)redhat.com> 2.6.33-0.40.rc7.git0
- Add libdwarf-devel to build deps so perf gets linked to it.
* Fri Feb 05 2010 Kyle McMartin <kyle(a)redhat.com>
- If 0, continue with kernel-firmware, otherwise prereq on the
separate linux-firmware pkg. Thanks to dzickus for noticing.
