Backlog of scm-commits
by Jon Stanley
I recently took over as owner of the scm-commits list. There were a
number of CVS commits that got moderated during the mailing list
migration due to a misconfiguration of the list. I went ahead and
released all of them, so a bunch of commits from Jan 10 will show up
on the scm-commits list. Sorry for the noise, but I figured it better
to preserve them than silently throw them away.
Thanks!

[Test-Announce] 2010-02-04 - Fedora Test Day - NFSv4 by default
by James Laska
Greetings folks,
It's been quiet on the test day front for some time now. However, rest
assured, we are kicking off the Fedora 13 test day schedule in style. I
invite you to join #fedora-test-day this Thursday, February 4, 2010 for
the first of many Fedora 13 test days.
Qian Cai and Steve Dickson will be guiding test and triage as we
validate the Fedora 13 feature 'NFSv4 by default' [1]. Cai is putting
some finishing touches on the test cases now. However, for those
unfamiliar with testing NFS, you'll get a chance to run the upstream
test suite 'connectathon' in several different environments. In
addition to the posted test cases, you're encouraged to join and
validate running the latest NFS in your environment.
Given how early it is in the release cycle, Rawhide *and* Fedora 12 can
also be used to participate. Don't have a spare system? Not to worry.
The type of testing planned can also be done using virtual guests.
For more information on the event, check out the wiki at
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Test_Day:2010-02-04_NFS.
Hope to see you in #fedora-test-day this Thursday.
Thanks,
James

The term " marketing " is judiciously sprinkled through that quote.
For some people, " marketing " has a bad connotation.
Images of a sweaty, poorly-dressed loud-mouth ramming something
you don't want down your throat.
( If " marketing " didn't have a bad connotation for you,
I've ruined it for you now. )
Anyway, before this discussion gets all riled up about " marketing "
please sit down, take a breath, and use the word " outreach " instead
of " marketing " and see if that makes you feel better.
I had one thought that was actually close to being on topic.
Fedora does not exist in a vacuum, or Linux in general.
Were there many people looking for alternatives to current OS
products from Microsoft, and now that has changed with the
recent release of Windows 7 ?
That event wouldn't impact contributors, who for the most part are
committed to Linux if not Fedora. However it would impact the total
number
of downloads, and general interest in Fedora as seen by hits to the
web site.
One last thought.
Marketing is like optimizing code.
Profile, so you know what to optimize, instead of optimizing
random snippets of code hoping that will work.
The numbers posted by Mr. McGrath are similar to the results of
profiling code.
If you don't think the numbers are representative,
find a way to get numbers that that you think are representative,
and justify why you think that.
That is, if you think he profiled the wrong use-case for code ;)
We can only market, er optimize, given the data we have.
Anyone have any data that provides a different perspective ?

<value optimized out> even with gcc -g -O0
by Chuck Anderson
I'm trying to debug an issue for the upstream author of ocp and am
running into an issue where gdb is showing "<value optimized out>" for
variables even though I've compiled the program with gcc -g -O0. Are
there any gcc/gdb gurus who can help?
Compiler excerpts:
gcc -g -O0 -fPIC -Wall -I.././ -I.././gnulib kickload.c -o kickload.o -c
gcc -g -O0 -fPIC -Wall -I.././ -I.././gnulib compdate.c -o compdate.o -c
...
gcc -g -O0 -fPIC -Wall -I./ -I./gnulib -o ocp boot/kickload.o -pthread -ldl goodies/helpc/ocphhc doc/opencp.dox ocp.hlp
gdb output:

[RFC PATCH] use sulogin in single-user mode
by Bill Nottingham
We have an existing bug where if you're in single-user mode, and
SELinux is active, various commands don't print to the console.
The root of this is the single-user shell isn't running in the
right SELinux context, as there's nothing to distinguish this from
the 'normal' shells run during bootup.
By far, the simplest fix is to run something that starts a shell
via a 'normal' login-ish mechanism. Hence, the attached patch
that switches to sulogin for single user mode.
However, this changes behavior that has existed since the dawn
of time in Red Hat/Fedora systems; with this change, single-user
mode would now require the root password. This is both when
booting with 'linux single/linux S', or going to runlevel 1
with 'telinit 1'.
Comments?

orphaning terminator
by Ian Weller
I feel like I'm neglecting the terminator package because I don't have
enough time to send the bugs and feature requests upstream or debug them
myself. Anybody interested, give me a shout and I'll let the package go
in pkgdb.
