As usual, the live cd isos don't fit...
I've spent some time last night looking for suspicious dependencies,
etc. Here are some of the things I spotted:
* Some devel packages get dragged in:
- policycoreutils-gui pulls in selinux-policy-devel, which in turn
pulls in checkpolicy. Why ?
- mono-winforms pulls in libgdiplus-devel
* Some other questionable dependencies:
- man pulls in diffutils just so that man -a can optionally
use /usr/binb/cmp
- ekiga pulls in SDL ?
* Packages which appear too large for other reasons
- About half the size of mono-core seems to be .mdb files. Isn't
that debuginfo and should go in a -debuginfo package ?
- opal contains the largest shared library by far. Something must
go really wrong with the autogenerated C++ code there. The library
contains > 35.000 symbols...
- ghostscript ships the next largest shared library. From the looks
of it, this is because it includes copies of libpng, libjpeg,
libjasper and libz....

In the SE Linux management interface, you can create a custom policy module or
make adjustments to user roles. Its uses macros and interfaces defined in the
main policy. So, you need the policy source and policy compiler in case you
want to do this.

Please give the raw data: ls -l *.iso
The amount of overage can influence the attempted remedies
(drop packages, etc.) Also, older burners can become unreliable
near the outer edge, so the difference between MiB and MB matters:
700MiB 734,003,200 bytes (700*1024*1024)
700MB 700,000,000 bytes (667MiB)
Some users choose a 1GB USB flash memory device instead of a
physical CD-ROM, and often they don't care about a 700MB limit.
Besides, USB2.0 flash memory is faster; time from auto boot
to login for Fedora-8-LiveCD:
139 sec "32x" CD-ROM (4.5MB/s max, 110 milliseconds/seek)
50 sec USB2.0 flash memory (10MB/s read, 15 microseconds/seek)
After that, why does Fedora not use compression like KNOPPIX?
Using the cloop device with gzip fits a filesystem of about 1.2GB
onto a CD-ROM, while lzma often can squeeze in another 15% or more.

Boot up the f8 livecd and do a df -h. 2+G. Fedora uses squashfs on an
ext3 fsimg. Ubuntu gets a bit better because they use unionfs with
squashfs native (but only about 5% better). I'm sure fedora will use
lzma if/when that squashfs patch gets into fedora's packages.
(and in the name of full disclosure, when I recently complained about
the size of selinux, I said something like 100MB. I think that may
actually be true, given experiments I made removing it, and related
dependencies, though 50M is what I see with packages named
selin*&setro*. And those numbers are from the uncompressed (out of
2.1G) size of the livecd, not the compressed size).

When I talked with Dan about this last, he said that he wanted to rename
selinux-policy-devel as "devel" is a bit of a misnomer

grub also needs diffutils for cmp so that it can verify installation was
successful

Just out of interest, what is the rationale for pulling in ekiga? Drop
ekiga (and therefore SDL) and you're close to shaving off the 12-odd
MB you need to lose for the live cd. Not having something close to
debian popcon its difficult to guess the demand but you could always
do this for Alpha and see what fuss gets kicked up?
Or maybe I'm missing something obvious....
