Agere is an orinoco, isn't it? Just use the stock driver...

Yes that would be an opinion if the orinoco driver actually fully supported
the complete set of instructions that Agere provide.
Even with the integration of the latest orinoco version, the current driver
is not able to support scanning and doesn't support wpa_supplicant...

Upstream Orinoco has supported scanning for quite a while. Dave Jones
merged that support into the upstream kernel sometime around 2.6.14.
Furthermore, if you really want _everything_ that the orinoco has to
offer, don't use the 'orinoco' driver, use the 'hostap' driver in
recent
kernels. That supports both Master mode _and_ wpa_supplicant. In fact,
if I plug in my WaveLAN card, hostap seems to be the default driver
anyway, not orinoco.
What other bits are missing that aren't provided by hostap?

Sorry for being dumb, but the hostap homepage states that hostap
supports prism, and nothing else. Furthermore it does not seem to do
anything on my iBook (Airport is orinoco-based).

Ok, that might be the case that it doesn't support Airport since Airport
is slightly different. In any case, it's doubtful that the Agere driver
would support Airport either (please correct me if I'm wrong).
However, last time I stuck in my WaveLAN card (a Hermes I chipset, ie
way way way before prism) it got bound to the hostap driver, not
orinoco.
I just checked the PCMCIA binding table of hostap, and there is
significant overlap with orinoco, meaning that most cards that orinoco
supports (including WaveLAN/hermes) should work with hostap.

Airport uses an airport driver stacked on orinoco stacked on hermes
in 2.4 and 2.6.
Yup, because hostap doesn't support the 'macio' bus. So it obviously
won't be able to do WPA in software like the hostap stack does, but it
certainly should be doing scanning in any recent kernels from the past 3
or 4 months. However, the shim layer for airport on top of hostap
doesn't look to large, if somebody wanted to loan me an iBook with an
Airport card, I might be willing to port it to hostap :)
