xwd -root -silent -out screenshot.xwd
and then import in gimp or convert in pnm with xwdtopnm (in netpbm-progs)
xwdtopnm screenshot.xwd > screenshot.pbm
You can also dump other local/remote displays with the -display option....

You can also go to ebay, bid on a digital camera, then take pictures
of the screen when it arrives. Then take the flash card to the local
pharmacy, get them printed out, then take them to a photo processing
shop, and ask them to scan it, crop it, remove the flash glare, and
save on a CD as a TIFF.
Take the CD with you, insert into your computer, do "dd /dev/cdrom0
~/cd.iso", then "mount -o loop ~/cd.iso /mnt/cdrom". Run
"tiff2pdf",
and then run "evince image.pdf".
In the morning, when evince has stopped rendering the image, click
"fullscreen".
In the evening, when evince has stopped rendering the image again, you
can then press "Print Screen" and save your image as
"screenshot.png."
Nothing to it, really.

Why bother with all of these "new fangled" inventions like photography,
etc. They have poor archival properties. What you really want to do is
to stare at the screen for a while to make sure that you've memorized
every last pixel on the display. Next, go out and mine some red and
yellow ochre, hematite, manganese oxide and charcoal. Then find some
nice quiet cave and use the minerals that you've just mined to paint
your screenshot on the cave walls. Then, in 10,000 years when some
scientist rediscovers your screenshot they can wonder what part a
"kernel oops" took part in our primitive religious ceremonies.

XEROX machine and press the button. Then FAX the result. You've never
heard of the modern electronic office, have you?

Nonsense. 20 minutes work by a class of diligent 5th-graders armed
with rulers and color-charts should provide him with ample information
to whip up an implementation of a Cohen-Daubechies-Feauveau wavelet on
the back of an envelope which will be a bitrot-proof mathematical
description of his screen. This will be trivially understood by
anyone without any need for pointless image processing software, or
indeed a computer screen.
