Hi folks.
As i've written last Friday, i have been running a complete install and
removal test for all packages of the Friday snapshot of FC-Devel.
Here the result summary:
176 distinct failures
93 failures because of missing PreReq: coreutils (various commands in
scripts not available during install or erase)
53 failures because of missing PreReq: hicolor-icon-theme or using
--ignore-theme-index for gtk-update-icon-cache
20 failures because of missing PreReq: chkconfig
5 failures because of missing PreReq: info
2 failures because of missing PreReq: selinux-policy-targeted
1 failures because of missing PreReq: scrollkeeper
1 failures because of a typo in a script
1 failures because of wierd ldconfig problem (most likely test bug)

I may be completely wrong, but couldn't it be assumed that
coreutils is always installed? A linux system without rm doesn't
make much sense...
For Extras, at least, coreutils is listed as one of the exceptions to the
BuildRequires rule:

Those only speaks about BuildRequires though, and there i completely
agree that a certain base set of development packages has to be
installed before trying to rebuild anything. What my test covered though
is install and remove requirements (resp. PreReqs to be more precise)
and without that information rpm can't determine wether it needs to
install coreutils before or after some package.

Not during installation :) anaconda uses package dependencies
to order
the package installation correctly.

Yeah, i forgot to mention, this whole test is mainly for completeness.
Quite a few packages have coreutils as a requirement in Fedora Core, and
for packages that have a real PreReq this actually makes sense and is
certainly needed as rpm otherwise could always just put coreutils at
some later point in the install order and suddenly tons of pre or post
install scripts would break. And thats basically what this test
revealed, that there are actually quite a few packages that can break if
coreutils isn't installed prior to them, so this is really a missing
PreReq dependency.

Requiers(pre): coreutils
PreReq implies also that coreutils is required after-install/at-runtime,

Yes, exactly. PreReq itself is the socalled legacy prerequires, which
basically covers everything and oversimplified states that the mentioned

Thanks for the explanation... Indeed it isn't a live system but a
filesystem being populated at the same time scripts are run, so having
coreutils required is indeed important. Maybe, when the filesystem is
depopulated coreutils cannot be removed anyway but who knows, it is indeed
still a good thing to have everything right.
I don't know if it is easy/possible/interesting, but if it is, could it be
possible to do similar things for extras without too much work? Or maybe
it is too early as extras are not handled by anaconda anyway?

Yes, of course, the test can be run on FC-Extras as well without much
work as everything except the reporting is automated. I wanted to rerun
the test anyway sometime soon on a different (and much faster) machine.
The test just takes very long to run. The one i did now took about 70
hours altogether on a "standard" desktop machine. But if you think about
it, this was for over 2200 packages. This test therefore basically did
2200 complete installs and remvoals which boils down to about 2 minutes
per package for the whole install/remove operation, and that's really fast.

comps. It will always be at the top of the input to tsort, and tsort
won't move it later except when it's inserting something above it to
satisfy a coreutils (or the 4 packages in front of it) dependency.

Absolutely true, thats why i said those errors are really just for
completeness as real installations always have to install those
components. The other errors though like chkconfig and the other prereqs
on the other hand are "real" errors in the sense that chkconfig isn't
anywhere to be found in comps.xml and only gets pulled in if it's really
required.

Something else must be broken then:
rpm -q --requires avahi
-> python
rpm -q --requires python
-> /usr/bin/env
rpm -qf /usr/bin/env
-> coreutils
So avahi has a chained requirement on coreutils via python and coreutils
has to be installed prior to python which in turn has to be installed
prior to avahi.
Did you do an anaconda install resp. how did you get this error?

No, hdlist is gone. The package groups come from comps.xml, and unless
you write yourself a really bogus kickstart file the initial package set
is populated in the order from comps, which means you should have the
packages in core first. That's *before* the depsolver and ordering run.
It's all yum depsolver ordering now.

populated according to the order in comps.
I just did a fresh install of FC5T3 and avahi was installed before
coreutils, and thus the post script broke. A bug has been filed
against avahi.
