The point of that backend is to provide basic transport to all USB
printers. In fact, all drivers ought to work with the USB backend, and
IMHO any that don't are buggy.
But in the case where system-config-printer *knows* that the detected printer
is HP, why show the 'USB' option at all - why not just go ahead and install
the 'HPLIP' way, cutting out a redundant 'options' stage?
That would avoid unnecessary puzzlement for newcomers to Linux and also make
the install slicker.
(Puzzlement because - as I did at first - they are liable to select 'USB' as
confirmation "Yes, the USB printer". Then they find - even more puzzlingly -
that HPLIP does not recognise the printer installed via the 'USB' option!!!)
