RE: X display issues with nVidia cards
by Strydom, Hennie
I have an Athlon XP with nVidia geForce 2 (32MB) and a K6 with PCI TNT2
Ultra (32MB).
Both installed fine on RH9 and FC1, in graphical mode. (The K6 also has
on-board SIS AGP, which cannot be disabled, but it correctly installs once
the BIOS is set to PCI graphics first.)
Both ran RH8 before RH9. I upgraded to RH9, and did both the upgrade to FC1
and a clean install of FC1.
Once running I install the nVidia supplied drivers, since they provide a
substantial speed improvement, but the supplied drivers did work.
This does not directly answer your question, but does indicate that install
on nVidia certainly works for some.

Hennie

How do you come to this impression?
CVE lists 3 times postfix in the last three years (for postfix 1.x, *none* for 2.x)
sendmail has about 20 (several in 2003)!

Ok, this is a new thread...
I'm not a postfix advocate, but since I don't think I can make people switch to courier,
I would suggest postfix as the alternative.
But the important thing when doing this switch, is abandoning /var/spool/mail and using
$HOME/Maildir by default (with the mail clients accordingly configured).
/var/spool/mail (and mbox files in general) are even a bigger nightmare than sendmail.

Now of course this begs the question....
Is there an easy-bake way to create these profile specific grub entries
as part of the easy-bake way to define specific hardware profiles? And
is there a clever way to keep profile specific grub entries in sync
after a kernel upgrade, so that that profile specific grub entries do
not have to be recreated by hand after the upgrade?

Automatically bringing ethernet interfaces up when the cable is connected (Fedora Core 2 Wishlists)
by Jaap A. Haitsma
Hi,
I apologize if this was already mentioned in Fedora Core 2 Wislists
thread but going trough 200 mails a day of which the subject line does
not really indicate if I'm interested in reading them, was a bit
daunting. Furthermore the search feature on the archives doesn't work at
the moment.
I would like to see that a network interface is automatically "ifupped"
when a cable gets connected and "ifdowned" if it is disconnected.
If network interfaces are then default configured with DHCP and DNS via
DHCP, networking will work for most people straight out of the box.
And for users of the other OS will be the expected behaviour

Is it _that_ hard changing applications to use lockf (or fcntl) ?
To me it sounds like one could go through all mail applications in
fedora and just make them use one of them (I'm guessing there is more to
it that that...). Or is the problem more for 3.party apps/not shipped
with fedora ?

fedora-devel not up-to-date with fedora-yarrow-updates? (please fix)
by Mark Mielke
The following packages in fedora-yarrow-updates, are not in fedora-devel:
fedora-yarrow-updates fedora-devel
bash-2.05b-33 bash-2.05b-34
binutils-2.14.90.0.6-3 binutils-2.14.90.0.6-4
gnupg-1.2.3-1 gnupg-1.2.3-2
mktemp-1.5-6 mktemp-1.5.1-1
nss_ldap-207-3 nss_ldap-207-6
ntp-4.1.2-5 ntp-4.2.0-2
postfix-2.0.11-5 postfix-2.0.16-1
sed-4.0.8-1 sed-4.0.8-2
I'm sure this is a process thing. From a process perspective, this seems
wrong. Shouldn't fedora-devel *always* see packages earlier or at the same
time as fedora-yarrow-updates? People who only test against fedora-devel
will not be testing the above packages.
I want to help you all test the packages. Right now, I have to make
sure I have the latest packages in both fedora-yarrow-updates *and*
fedora-devel. This seems wrong.
Can the process be fixed?
Thanks,
mark
