I would like to see a powerful monitoring application, including
database archiving of statistics.
Coincidently, I wrote such software ;-).
Moodss is a modular monitoring application, which supports the Linux
operating system (CPU, memory, disks, sensors, ...), databases (MySQL,
ODBC, ...), networking (SNMP, Apache, ...), and any device or process
for which a module can be developed (in a scripting or compiled
language: Tcl, Python, Perl, C).
A very intuitive GUI with full drag'n'drop support allows the
construction of powerful dashboards with graphs, pie charts, ...
Proactive monitoring is achieved via a thorough thresholds
functionality, including warning by multiple emails, user defined
scripts, and an included daemon for background monitoring.
Finally, on top of real-time monitoring, any part of the visible data
can be stored in a SQL database (MySQL or ODBC) by both the GUI and
daemon applications, so that, for example, complete history over time
can be made available in web pages, common spreadsheet software, or
presentations.
If you manage a dynamic international web site, and you suspect
overloading occurs during the night, you could record statistics on the
system (CPU usage, memory, swapping, disk, ...), network (ethernet
device, router ports via SNMP), database health and I/O, and load on the
Apache web server, then browse the results in the morning using the same
graphical software to determine the origin of the problem.
More information, reviews, ... can be found at
http://jfontain.free.fr/moodss/
Should you like to try it, all the required software in the bugzilla QA
pipe:

What do you think? I am open to suggestions to make it work.

linux badly needs a standard sound daemon
by lupus
I'm tired of installing rpm's that ask me for artsd.
I think kde people are tired of getting esd not found errors to :)
So all desktop users profit from a standard sound daemon
MAS or JACK looks like a good replacement
But why isn't this happening? Is it to difficult to implement or isn't
there a decent replacement for esound and artsd?

IPv6 and IPv4 resolver preference bug?
by Felipe Alfaro Solana
Hi!
I deployed a test-bed IPv6 on my network some months ago. The last time
I checked it was running, I could "telnet" and "ssh" into other boxes
and check, by using "netstat", that IPv6 connections were being
established, even when both A and AAAA records were defined in the DNS
for the remote host.
Today, however, I have checked again and, what a surprise, it seems the
resolver is acting somewhat strangely. First, it's giving preference to
inet4 sockets over inet6 (telnetting to a host which has both A and AAAA
records defined, establishes an IPv4 connection over TCP), but what's
more, here's what "tcpdump" displays:
15:13:36.945274 192.168.0.100.33128 > 192.168.0.1.domain: 43559+ AAAA?

As you can see, the resolver asks in first place for an IPv6 AAAA record
and then it's A record. Then, a two queries are sent to the DNS server,
one asking for the IPv6 ip6.arpa PTR record and another one for the IPv4
in-addr.arpa PTR record. What's really strange is the last query, asking
again for the A record of the remote host. I don't understand why this
query is sent in last place (cause this query was already done before),
and also why the application chose to use IPv4 over IPv6 when the remote
host supports both.
As I've read on RFC documents, when both A and AAAA records are defined
for a given host, the application should give preference to the IPv6
protocol over the IPv4 protocol. However, this is not the case. I can
force a TCP over IPv6 session by using "ssh -6", for example, but this
is not the desired behavior.
Does anyone know what's going on here? Is this a glibc's libresolv bug?
Thanks!

RE: Fedora Core 2 wishlists
by Frank Dauer
Hi!
In #92149 (https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=92149) I
added
a little patch to the php spec file to build the php-mssql-module
conditionally.
(If FreeTDS is installed)
The mssql module is used by php to connect to M$ SQL servers, which
enables a wide range of php applications to integrate with M$
applications
using the M$ SQL server.
Building the mssql module requires a set of libraries and headers called
FreeTDS (www.freetds.org).
As of php-4.3.2 the mssql module is working quite fine here in
combination
with FreeTDS.
So my wish is that FreeTDS will be included (rpm version is already
available
for download) and that the mssql module of php will be enabled. :o)

Frank

dep. issues w/ python-tools, ruby-tcltk, setools, tkinter
by Mark Mielke
After upgrading tcl from fedora-devel, the packages listed above cannot
be installed (well, I had to uninstall them to install tcl).
python-tools needs a newer tkinter
ruby-tcltk needs tcl 8.3 (should it be rebuilt with 8.4?)
setools needs tcl 8.3 (should it be rebuilt with 8.4?)
tkinter needs libtix8.1.8.3.so (do we still use tix?)

OpenGroupware info
by Dax Kelson
Having a credible, GPLd, client-to-server groupware solution is
something people have been clamoring for. I think it would really help
drive Linux adoption in small and medium businesses.
Speaking with the main developer of OpenGroupware, Helge Hess, has
turned up more details.
* A stable OGo 1.0 release in January or February
* Evolution v1.4 and v2.0 connector in progress
Timing and software maturity permitting, inclusion in FCv2 would be a
substantial addition.
There is a mailing list for the connector, see this post of initial
success (also several crashes).
