Cross posting.
by Michael Favia
There is an awful lot of cross posting between test and devel these
days. It gets pretty tiresome deleting threads that are exact duplicates
on both lists and im afraid the only result is the possible deletion of
something that is pertinent to the respective list. Is this desired or
expected activity? I'd cross post this but i think vaguely i remember
something about pots and kettles. -mf

Bluetooth security
by Chris Adams
I'm trying to get a Bluetooth mouse working with my notebook and
rawhide. I'm getting close, but I realized one thing missing: how do I
set up security?
When I associate my mouse with WinXP, it asks me to verify I want to do
that (shows the device ID so I can make sure only my mouse works). When
I turn my mouse on while the notebook is running Linux, it grabs it
automatically. How do I keep just any mouse from associating with my
notebook under Linux?

REQUEST FOR TESTERS: xorg-x11-fonts-7.0-2
by Mike A. Harris
I've built new xorg-x11-fonts packages to attempt to resolve
bug #173875. The new packages seem to resolve the issue fine
for me with local testing.
However, since this changes the encodings.dir files which all
invocations of mkfontdir and mkfontscale use, it is possible
that these changes at least theoretically could change the
way that fonts.dir files get generated. It is thus theoretically
possible that people's fonts could disappear, or that some other
unexpected results could occur after updating to the new font
packages.
As such, since FC5 is very close, in line with keeping risks
to a minimum this late in the cycle, I want to get as many
people as possible to upgrade to the new font packages and
provide feedback before I consider putting them into rawhide.
Please download the following font rpms, and upgrade to all
of them with "rpm -Uvh *.rpm" and report back any error messages
that occur, or any problems that occur after upgrading to the
new packages. Please reboot your system so that xfs, the
X server, and whatnot are all completely restarted to maximize
the testing benefit.
Additionally, I have put a diff of the spec file changes I've
made in a file attachment in the bug. Peer review of the
changes are also appreciated.
The idea here is to try to avoid last minute catastrophes from
entering the fray. Your help in testing this is greatly
appreciated.

I don't know if it is related but since the upgrade I cannot start kde or gnome
anymore as a normal user. For kde I get:
startkde: Starting up...
DCOP aborting call from 'anonymous-776' to 'kded'
startkde: Shutting down...
klauncher: Exiting on signal 1
startkde: Running shutdown scripts...
startkde: Done.
Starting X and KDE as root works fine though!
I reinstalled the whole kde set, and een went back to kde of FC5test3
(as suggested by older post having similar problems), but that does not
help. Also removing the .kde tree does not help.
It probably is some sort of permission problem but I don't have a clue
where to look....
Any suggestions?
Thanks
-Marcel

by Erwin Rol
Hey all,
I tried to use eclipse for a C++ project but after liek 10 crashes in
the last 30 minutes i kind of gave up.
My question; is there anybody out there that actually uses eclipse ? And
with uses i mean like working with it 8 hours a day without a crash ever

BTW: this is on x86_64 and FC5.

Results for install and remove tests for FC-Devel
by Phil Knirsch
Hi folks.
As i've written last Friday, i have been running a complete install and
removal test for all packages of the Friday snapshot of FC-Devel.
Here the result summary:
176 distinct failures
93 failures because of missing PreReq: coreutils (various commands in
scripts not available during install or erase)
53 failures because of missing PreReq: hicolor-icon-theme or using
--ignore-theme-index for gtk-update-icon-cache
20 failures because of missing PreReq: chkconfig
5 failures because of missing PreReq: info
2 failures because of missing PreReq: selinux-policy-targeted
1 failures because of missing PreReq: scrollkeeper
1 failures because of a typo in a script
1 failures because of wierd ldconfig problem (most likely test bug)
I've attached the whole list to this email.
Read ya, Phil

RPM file name standard?
by Joe Desbonnet
Is there a document that defines the format of a RPM file name for the
Fedora project?
For example consider these RPMs:
ImageMagick-perl-6.2.2.0-3.fc4.0.i386.rpm
ImageMagick-perl-6.2.2.0-3.fc4.1.i386.rpm
I'm puzzled about the significance of the numbers 0 and 1 following
".fc4." in these update
RPMs.
Thanks,
Joe.

Stateless linux and an idea of mine for SMALL networks without servers
by Nic
Disclaimer: I hope that this is the right mailing list, but I really
wanted to reach developers would can say if it's feasible and what to
use for that.
Anyway, I was fighting the usual problems with networks and came up with the
following dream to make my life easier as a network admin. Basically I
am tired of fixing things, of worrying if a hard disk will die, of
having to deal with data access, backup etc...
I was thinking this through by looking at how most of my coworkers,
friends, and small offices use their PCs in day-to-day operations and
applying that work flow to a solution.
Before, somebody screams, this means little or moderate daily data
generation so that, basically, a laptop drive could hold the entire
company's data. (This may require email-purge rules and other things
like that).
Anyway here it is: Basically, I suggest that (almost) all PCs in the
network be laptops with the exact same image. Furthermore, they
replicate their HD continuously (with possibly some delay).
This certainly applies to the user data and application. It may not
be necessary for the OS
I am not sure of the technology to use here, but I thought something
deriving from the P-to-P technology, some distributed file system,
some database replication technology or even freenet could be a
good base.
Since every laptop will contain ALL the data for the
whole network, every laptop uses hardware encryption
at the hard disk level using an external dongle/card/whatever to limit
the risk when a laptop is lost or stolen.
Additionally, every login ALSO uses a dongle/card for access to their
account. This makes it (almost) impossible for somebody stealing a
laptop to get access to the whole data. Additionally, it makes it
(alomst) impossible for somebody to fet to other people's data. If a
system dies, you just get a new one and sync it up. However, one main
idea is that you always have EVERYTHING you need right where you are,
no matter WHERE you are. Also, there is no UPS to worry about.
Communication between PCs could be implemented using VPN/IPSec or
whatever other protected mechanism. Internet access would have to be
"sandboxed", but UNIX based OSes allow for that easily. That's the
gist of it. A lot of things can be configured in many ways, but the
whole point here is to simplify people's life.
Look at it from a disaster recovery: a lot of people bring their laptop home.
Even if the company's building burns down as well as a few employees
homes, one surviving laptop is enough to bring the business back online.
Pros:
* seamless company disaster recovery
* seamless personal computer loss recovery (you lose everything since
the last sync)
* you can use ANY laptop and find YOUR own environment and files
* no central server/single point of failure
* no UPS except for the internet firewall (this comes from the PCs
being laptops)
Cons:
* sync across a lot of PCs might be tricky and needs to be tuned.
Maybe randonly select one as master like the SMB Master browser
election works?
* each laptop needs to have enough space for the whole company's data
* maybe not appropriate for disk intensive applications (video capture...)
I wanted to post it here for other people to use if they think it's a
good idea. (and also to preempt any proprietary company from saying
"me first")
It seems that Windows Vista is coming with some automatic
synchronization across two PCs so, that's one step towards it, but we
have different goals.
I posted this somewhere and somebody pointed me toward stateless linux
and it seems pretty cool and close to what I was thinking of. I'll
look smoe more into it, but does anybody see this as useful for VERY
SMALL networks? (I already got bashed by enterprise admins sneernig at
people who don't want a rack server, so if that's your intent, just
reply "me too").
Feel free to comment (I know people will).
