Guidelines for huge spec changelogs?
by Michael Schwendt
Some [or many?] packages in the collection contain really huge spec
%changelog sections, which contain entries that date back as far as
the middle 90's.
It is not unusual that entries, which are several years old, have become
irrelevant or wrong or get lost among several dozen entries like "rebuilt"
or "update to x.y.z". The changelogs however are included in the rpm
packages completely and also in web pages generated from them, e.g. in
koji or repoview.
Do we have any guidelines about what to do with them and whether it
is permitted to strip the changelogs from time to time? (and if so,
whether to archive them anywhere other than in cvs?)
Not a big issue, not at all, I'm just curious. ;o)

A word on package management
by J French
Package management could be greatly sped up if the header files were
split into two separate files, one containing only the package's
version, dependencies and conflicts and the other containing all of the
information that people don't normally look at (license, author,
changelog, etc)
Realistically speaking, all of the other package information could be
gained by someone who cares to read it with something like "yum viewinfo
thepackage". Some changes to createrepo and yum itself would probably
make implementation of this rather simple.
On the subject of licenses, at least the GPL should exist in an RPM by
itself and be a dependency of all packages covered under that license.
The same could be done for other licenses as well and this would ensure
the end user had a copy on system. Of course, this would require a bit
of work by the package management team as the dependency would need to
be added to all of those package. Even better, the proper license RPM
could be dictated by the License field already in those files.
Thoughts?

rc2 includes old kernel in new grub.conf

upgrading t4 -> rc2, chose new bootloader, grub.
Here's the new grub.conf:

changes to this file
# NOTICE: You have a /boot partition. This means that

3190 was the t4 kernel. And vmlinuz-2.6.21-1.3190.fc7 has
been removed. So on reboot, you get a file not found error
for the default boot kernel.
fedora-base does boot.

t4 upgrade from fc6: fails on lvm fstab naming
by sean darcy
Upgrading from fc6 to T4, fstab:
LABEL=/ / ext3
defaults 1 1
LABEL=/boot /boot ext3
defaults 1 2
devpts /dev/pts devpts
gid=5,mode=620 0 0
tmpfs /dev/shm tmpfs
defaults 0 0
proc /proc proc
defaults 0 0
sysfs /sys sysfs
defaults 0 0
LABEL=WIN /win vfat
defaults 0 0
LABEL=Swap-sda3 swap swap
defaults 0 0
/dev/video-vol/video /video ext3
defaults 1 2
/dev/video-vol/swap swap swap
defaults 0 0
The upgrade died with a message about the /dev/video-vol/*
entries. Couldn't find how to LABEL lvm partitions, so just
deleted them from fstab, then installed.
After install, I added the lvm partitions back into fstab,
just as above. That works fine.
I couldn't find anything about this in bz, and I'm not sure
how to report it, or even if it is a bug.

IPv6 is explicitly disabled
by Steve Hill
I'm running rawhide and have 2 files in /etc/modprobe.d which are not
owned by any package and both contain the line "install ipv6 /bin/true".
The files are called disable-ipv6 and disable-ipv6-0 - with these files
present the ipv6 module is never loaded and therefore IPv6 will never
work, even when you explicitly configure the network to use IPv6 and have
a router advertising itself.
This seems like a backwards step - it causes problems for those of us who
use IPv6 networks in our day to day lives and doesn't exactly help promote
the badly needed migration towards IPv6.
Is there a good reason for disabling IPv6 by default (it's worth noting
that not only did previous releases of Fedora enable it by default, but so
does Mac OS X and I believe Windows Vista)?

Fedora 7 RC Live images available via torrent
by Jeremy Katz
RC of the Fedora 7 Live image set (i686, x86_64, i686 KDE and x86_64
KDE) are now available at http://torrent.fedoraproject.org.
Note that the i686 images require an i686 class machine and should be
able to be burned on 700 meg CD images.
The x86_64 images are more intended for DVD media, but brave souls may
get away with the extended CD formats :-)
Thanks for your testing help!

RFC: Fedora 8 and KDE 4
by Kevin Kofler
Last week, I have prepared a draft document detailing how to go on with KDE 4
in Fedora as I see it:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/KevinKofler/F8KDE4Plan
This has already gotten some quick looks and positive reactions at last week's
KDE SIG meeting. However, not all interested parties were present. Now that the
CVS devel branch has unfrozen for Fedora 8, I think it's time to subject this
to broader discussion.
Once a plan is agreed on, we need to put the result (something like this
document, probably this document with some edits) into a more official
namespace on the wiki.
