yafray "renamed" to yafaray - pick it ?
by Nicolas Chauvet
Hi!
As announced at http://www.yafray.org, yafaray replaces YafRay 0.0.9.
Thus I'm thinking of submitting yafray as dead.package in Rawhide. (1)
On the other side, I'm not going to work on yafaray soon. So, if anyone
wants to start working on it, feel free.
Nicolas (kwizart)
(1), There is no reason why yafray should stop working with the current
blender releases. But there might be a problem when theses two are
installed together. (until now, blender either dlopen library or call
binary, from yafray).
This has to be discussed in the yafaray review. So, please cc'ed me on
the review, along with your favorite reviewer. (or ask me as a reviewer).

PackageKit soon to include the QPackageKit library, need advice
by Richard Hughes
Upstream the PackageKit-Qt library binding has been merged into the
PackageKit scm and will be in the next release tarball. This allows us
to keep the libraries in sync and also means QPackageKit gets a lot of
the love that PackageKit gets.
Love includes things like a .pc file, consistent so versioning, make
check integration and also much better integration with upstream.
Now we have two libraries (soon to be three), I'm intending to rename:
PackageKit-libs -> PackageKit-libs-glib
PackageKit-devel -> PackageKit-glib-devel
This allows us to create PackageKit-libs-qt and PackageKit-qt-devel and
then provide this for other QT and KDE applications to trivially build
against.
Does this conform to fedora naming conventions? I thought it was odd to
have -libs-foo and -foo-devel (switched order) but am trying to copy
convention from other frameworks in the repos.
This will obsolete qpackagekit, and kpackagekit will have to be rebuilt
against PackageKit-qt. This isn't a problem. kpackagekit is heading into
kde svn soon too, as this will be the future long term home of the KDE
bits.
Comments and suggestions welcome. Thanks.
Richard.

repodata and comps.xml filenames in hexadecimal?
by G.Wolfe Woodbury
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
I know someone is working on a rewrite of some of the stuff dealing with
repodata and comps.xml. I notice today that the names of the files in
repodata have the hexadecimal checksums prepended. Is this the new
"standard" or is there a bug in the generation scripts?

private group administration
by Lutz Lange
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
Hi all,
i was thinking about user creation and group administration. Every user
gets his own private group when he is created. And the motivation for
that is to avoid users sharing files with all other users to per default
right?
But what if the user wants to change his files with a specific user or
two? An easy though not well known way to do that would be to push these
users into the private group. For this to work the user has to be
Administrator of his private group.
( eg. i'm tux with group tux
- root has to make me administrator of my private group :
# gpasswd -A tux tux
now i can get paul in to my private group
tux@somewhere ~> gpasswd -a paul tux
or i could set/change my group passwort
tux@somewhere ~> gpasswd tux
change rights on /home/tux
tux@somewhere ~> chmod g+rx .
don't forget to check all the other dirs and files for group access
tux@somewhere ~> ls -la .
you might want to remove group and other bits
tux@somewhere ~> chmod g=,o= * .*
explicitly open a project dir in /home/tux
tux@somewhere ~> mkdir project
tux@somewhere ~> chmod g+rwx project
Writing this i realize that this will only make sense if i use the right
umask. So lets set it to something more secure, since i might not want
to change all my files with paul.
tux@somewhere ~> vi .bashrc
umask 077
All right it might not be in my best interest to share something in my
home dir, or if i do i have to be very careful about the permissions
there...
But i still thinks a user should be in control of his private group.
)
But he is not. This has to be set explicitly by the entity that creates
the user. I wonder what the reasoning is/was behind that.
Why is a user not made administrator of his private group per default?
Cheers
Lutz

ehci-hcd patch for alsa-driver-1.0.18rc3 snd-usb-us122l module
by Philippe Carriere
Hi,
I guess (and hope) you plan to soon integrate the last
alsa-driver-1.0.18rc3 modules. I alerted the alsa devel team
(http://mailman.alsa-project.org/pipermail/alsa-devel/2008-October/011349....) that the usb ehci-hcd module has to patched in order to have snd-usb-us122l module (the driver for the Tascam US-122l, USB 2.0 soundcard) to work. Unfortunately, the corresponding patch is not yet integrated to linux kernel and is not scheduled until 2.6.28 or still later.
>From mid-june 2008, I provided, on my personal website, patched kernel
for Fedora 9 (including patched ehci-hcd and part of what became
alsa-driver-1.0.18rc3) under 2.6.25 and presently 2.6.26 kernel for
support of Tascam US-122L. Now, an official integration in Fedora would
be the better way for standart users.
So the first question is: do you plan to integrate alsa-driver-1.0.18rc3
modules and if so, when ?
The next question is: which way you imagine for integrating the ehci-hcd
patch ? Directly adding the patch in kernel packaging (as I do) or
providing an alternative module (I am not very usual with the method to
do so) ?
I enclose the patch I just successly tested with rawhide Fedora 10 beta.
Note that this version is almost the same than the one I sent to
alsa-devel, essentially fitting exactly the line numbering.
Regards
Phil.

Uhm, maybe it's me, but if the system can boot from the dvd, why do you want
to install from cd's?
As to making cd's available on the dvd, I see a use case there, but then
perhaps it might be wiser to use a jigdo file that uses the rpm's already on
the dvd.
It can then on-the-fly compose the cd iso that are wanted.
