Talked to a coworker, who is a heavy MacOS user. She explained that, while the
firewall is disabled by default, inbound ports are still closed until you
explicitly open them. That sounds a lot more sane than not running a firewall
at all.
I don't ever explicitly open them. I check a box called "Remote Login"
and that launches sshd, and I can certainly connect to that box. I
suppose I have implicitly opened the port by checking the box to
enable sshd.
