Hi Andrew,
I could not find the files needed (i.e the update alternatives fails)
rpm -qa | egrep 'java|jdk|jre|j2re|gcj'
libgcj-devel-3.4.3-17
jdk-1.5.0-fcs
j2re-1.4.2-11.1.fc3.rf
libgcj4-4.0.0-0.22
gcc-java-3.4.3-17
libgcj4-devel-4.0.0-0.22
java-1.4.2-gcj4-compat-1.4.2.0-3jpp
libgcj-3.4.3-17
gcc4-java-4.0.0-0.22
What's missing ?

Yeah, you need to have your java alternative set to java-1.4.2-gcj4-compat.
It looks like it's currently set to java-1.4.2-gcj-compat (which uses gij
from the 3.4.x package).
Do the following (and note the 4s):
su - -c "update-alternatives --set java \
/usr/lib/jvm/jre-1.4.2-gcj4/bin/java"
su - -c "update-alternatives --set javac \
/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.4.2-gcj4/bin/javac"
