Hi,
About once a day my system randomly freezes while running X (gnome). I am not sure what debugging info to collect at this point, here are some details:
-This is a t42 thinkpad -I am running rawhide updating every day -this started happening about 10 days ago and just happened today again -it happens about once per day -it does not seem to matter what applications are running -it usually happens while i am moving the mouse
I had the same problem (at least it sounds the same) on my T42p when FC5 switched from the 2.6.16 kernel to 2.6.17 (I believe). A patch was dropped from the Fedora kernel radeon drm driver that disabled it unless a certain parameter was set.
Mike said the bug wouldn't get fixed unless people got bit by it.
The work around is to readd the patch or use the ATI driver.
Sorry I don't have more details but I'm waiting for my sushi to arrive and I just have my Treo. I filed a bugzilla bug at the time where the commentary and details are.

I have a Compaq EVO N800c, ATI Mobility Radeon 7500, rawhide updated daily, that I use about 10-12 hours a day. It randomly freezes about 4-5 times a day, no time patterns. I ran memtest86 without errors.

Complete system deadlocks began happening a few months ago in rawhide. Sometimes I can go days between lockups, sometimes it happens a few times a day. It *ALWAYS* seems to happen while I am moving the mouse.

And none of you thought to inform the developers untill days before release?
If it's not in bugzilla, it doesn't exist.
For what it's worth, my Radeon 9600XT is fine, I threw in a 7500 card and that also seemed to do okay but I didn't have time to do longterm testing.

What is this, shame on us? :)
I didn't see it enough of a pattern to make a sensible post until now. Sounds like this is related to the Radeon 7500 - I will file a bug...

If it's not in bugzilla, it doesn't exist.
One of the problems is the large number of bugzilla entries on bugzilla.redhat.com (40 bugs just against xorg-x11-drv-ati), and upstream on bugs.freedesktop.org, and the relationships between the two lists is particularly hairy (definitely not a one-to-one relationship, more like many-to-many ;-), and maybe a few maybe-to-none :-( ). So sorting through the lists is not for the faint of heart...

This problem has been especially frustrating because...
1) It cannot be reproduced easily on demand. Sometimes I can go days or even weeks without it happening. 2) When the deadlock happens, no methods seem able to get any debug information.
How useful is this kind of bug report? Not very. =(
Has anyone else noticed this lockup with Radeon 7500 happen only when moving the mouse?

Better than none at all, at least the developer can advice on ways to narrow down the cause and when other people search bugzilla (if ever) they will be able to CC themselves to the bug and potentially help track it down.

I will promptly replace my 9600 XT with my 7500 card, are you running any modifications on the out of the box FC6 X configuration I might want to apply to reproduce it?

Yes, I started seeing the exact same problem you describe above on my T30/7500 Radeon. Extremely random, sometimes days between lockups, sometimes a couple times a day. Always occurs when moving the mouse. Have to do a power-off to reboot.

Interestingly, if I am using compiz, the Radeon 7500 + mouse movement deadlock happens far less often.

My notebook has a Radeon 7500 and I've been seeing lots of lock-ups (always seems to be when I'm moving the mouse) since about Wednesday of last week (2006/10/18).
This is under KDE on FC5 and I haven't tried it with compiz.

Also that everyone thinks to say "me too" on existing bugs, even when their problem is likely to not be the same bug at all. So, here's a PSA:
Please file unique driver bugs every time.
I'm much happier to have to duplicate things myself, than to have to close a bug from A and have B reopen it because B is using a different generation card but experienced a similar problem.

I filed my dual-head problem upstream at

Sigh, another +1.
Thinkpad T30, Radeon 7500.
Runs fine on the thinkpad LCD 1024x768 screen.
Dual head is very unstable, will not run for longer than 10 minutes which makes it pretty unusable :-( Dual-head was not supported at all in FC-5, and was very stable in FC-4. (regressions *sigh*).
After playing around with the radeon driver more advanced options, I was able to setup it up with external CRT monitor only (with thinkpad LCD screen disabled), at 1600x1280. Runs ok, but I have had occasional X freezes, once every few days or so.
Is there a practical way to catch a kernel trace when that happens ?
A great positive with the Radeon 7500 is compiz *just works*, which is awesome.

Does it occur if you disable the silkenmouse support ? or whatever the mouse on sigio stuff is called

Could all the people who reported problems with the radeon driver try the latest version of the driver (I prepared an SRPM below).

Thx!

The latest 6.6.3 version seems to fix my dual-head freeze problem. Any chance to get this update into FC-6 ?

22:15:37 up 2 days, 6:45, 7 users, load average: 0.74, 0.93, 1.03
with this one (once a day was the norm before). ACPI on too, which seemed to make crashes more frequent.
Too early to tell, sure, but it _is_ looking good! DRI and everything enabled too (but not compiz, it's awful for battery life you know). +1 for getting this into updates-testing ASAP.
