Hi,
So I've been annoyed by the default position of xfce4-notifyd for a
while (since sometime in Fedora 24). When I try to change the volume
from the volume plugin on the top right, the notify shows up and covers
the volume control.
Recent I filed a bug here[1].
Kevin thought this worth a discussion so I send this here.
My current workaround is, either move the volume icon to somewhere else,
or change the default position of notification. And this is not user
friendly enough as it require the user to configure it themselves.
So thoughts?

Not really an answer to the question but I hadn't noticed the issue until
you mentioned it as I scroll on the panel icon to change volume.
As I haven't seen any other mentions of it I wonder if it is a problem for
many people. I suspect most people do as I do or more likely use volume
hotkeys. Personally I find the slider difficult to use.
I'll be interested to see what others think.

Same here. I only noticed it when I saw the bug report. I am also in
favor retaining the current default notification position (at least, top
right is my preferred location).

I agree this is the preferred notification location for many of the
XFCE users. In fact I also think it is a great place for a
notification. However, my pain point is, I am always using a
workstation instead of a laptop, where there are no volume control in
keyboard. In this situation, it is a pain.
Before F24 I remember the volume control is vertical, so it worked
well. Now the volume control is horizontal, and the problem comes...

A workaround: On my "work" keyboard I have set Ctrl-Shift-U and Ctrl-Shift-D
which I actually prefer over volume keys since my hands rest in the "natural"
position.
That being said, a more intelligent notification area would be a nice to have
but I don't have the skills to write it -- perhaps it can be filed as a
wishlist against XFCE.

Ah, I found a possibly better workaround.
I see there is a config to disable notification when changing volume.
So by disable the notification, every problem solved.
The disadvantage would be, if user want to see their volume when
changing using keyboard shortcuts, they will not see it.
