Another selinux rant

Since someone asked, here's my little SELinux rant:
Yesterday I set up a new server running F8. It's replacing an old
server and all it does is run sshd and openvpn. I decided to give
SELinux a try after many years of ignoring it.
I copied user home directories, /etc/passwd, /etc/shadow, /etc/group,
and ssh host keys from the old server to the new one. That was easy
enough.
I couldn't log into the machine using ssh public key authentication,
though--ssh kept falling back to password authentication. I checked
all the usual suspects like directory permissions, to no avail. I
passed -v -v -v to ssh and got no useful information.
After some poking around I noticed a bunch of messages in
/var/log/messages along the lines of "audit denied sshd btmp" and
"audit denied sshd /home/eswierk/..." blah blah blah. I figured this
was due to SELinux (although heaven knows why the message doesn't
contain the word "selinux"). Spent some time searching Google and came
across fixfiles, so I ran "fixfiles restore /", restarted sshd, and
voila, I could log in with a public key.
Next I copied the openvpn configuration from the old server and tried
to start it up. No joy. Having learned my lesson I headed straight to
/var/log/messages and once again found messages from SELinux, like
"audit denied openvpn ipp.txt". I ran "fixfiles restore /" again, but
this time it didn't help. Back to Google, and dug up some mailing list
messages with all sorts of stuff about updating policies. I spent
about 10 minutes trying various things without really understanding
them before resorting to the solution I do understand: set
SELINUX=disabled in /etc/sysconfig/selinux, reboot, done.
For me learning SELinux seems as pointless as trying to remember
iptables commands, or AFS trivia back when I was a student--all cause
me trouble just infrequently enough to ensure I have to relearn them
from scratch every time. If I were a full-time sysadmin of course it
would be a different story, but I really don't have the brain cycles
to remember anything more complicated than chmod and chown, and I
suspect a large number of accidental sysadmins feel the same.

tcl 8.5, stackchecking and 8Kingdoms

Hi All,
It turns out that I misread the stackchecking code (oops, brown paper bag
time), and that it is not at fault.
The problem is that Tcl has a thread model where one can have multiple
interpreters per thread, but may not call an interpreter from another thread
then the one it was created in, and this is just what 8Kingdoms was doing.
I'm working on a fix. In the mean time please turn stackchecking in the TCL
packages back on, it was not at fault and acutally caught an error. 8Kingdoms
working without it was more luck then anything else.

How to remove this warning

GPG Keysigning at FUDCon

Obsoleting packages

tcl-8.5.0-4, which will be hitting rawhide soon, obsoletes tcl-tcldict:
Obsoletes: tcl-tcldict <= 8.5.2
Provides: tcl-tcldict = 8.5.2
The tcl-tcldict package will no longer be necessary in Rawhide after
this. Is it necessary to remove the tcl-tcldict rpm from the
repository, or will it get removed automatically now that Tcl provides
tcl-tcldict?

Non-standard C-headers in glib2 (gtestutils.h)

Hi,
I could not help noticing gtestutils.h from glib2-2.15.0-4 is not a
standard C header file: it contains C++-style // comments. This breaks
building my package (balsa). Should I work around this problem or a
more up to date glib2 release is planned? I see the problem with the
header has been fixed in glib2 on 2007-12-21.

Condor package?

I understand that there is work going on at Red Hat to package the
Condor high-throughput computing environment
(http://www.cs.wisc.edu/condor/) for RH Linux--not sure if it's RHEL or
Fedora. Is anyone on this list working on that project?
We're interested in following the progress of that effort, and we might
be able to help out, at least some.

some FUDCon and hackfest details

This page includes a Google map with the hotel, hackfest and FUDCon
locations, and also some good places to get food and drink.
For the folks who are attending the Friday hackfest, it gives the
location and start time.
It also links to the page where travelers are coordinating their arrival
times.
The general plan for Friday is that it is day 1 of the hackfest. We have
a meeting place identified. From there, we can break up into smaller
groups. We'll have lunch provided for folks. Saturday will be the actual
FUDCon, taking place at Red Hat's headquarters. Sunday will be day 2 of
the hackfest, also taking place at Red Hat's headquarters.
