autoconf driving me mad
by Christoph Höger

hey there,
i want to patch & build openccs under fedora.
So I have to do the autoconf/automake chain. No problem at all, but one
special thing makes me wanne cry:
I see the following line in configure.in (yes its an relatively old
tarball):
GLOB_INCLUDE="-I${srcdir} -I${srcdir}/include"
AC_SUBST(GLOB_INCLUDE)
This means I have config headers in the include subdirectory, where I
actually build the package.
But my autoconf adds the following lines to the ./configure script:
# When building in place, set srcdir=.
if test "$ac_abs_confdir" = "$ac_pwd"; then
srcdir=.
fi
How can I fix that?
thank you
christoph

New tcl-8.5 and 8Kingdoms
by Hans de Goede
Hi all,
I just tried building 8Kingdoms with the new tcl in rawhide, it builds fine,
but it does not work.
Any of the actions (moving a unit for example) which normally invoke a tcl
script underneath now no longer work.
I'm quite good in fixing C bugs but this problem lies either in the interfacing
with tcl or in the tcl code itself and I'm helpless there. So I hope that
someone can try running 8Kingdoms with tcl 8.5, and write a fix.
Note I've also send a request upstream asking for help, I'll report back here
as soon as I get response.
If I don't have it fixed by F-9 then I will have to remove 8Kingdoms from
Fedora's repositories (better then shipping a broken version).
Thanks & Regards,
Hans

pgtcl 1.6.2 is out BTW -- it may be worth upgrading.

tgif does not work on fedora 8
by Massimo Canonico
Hi,
I have tested tgif in various fedora 8 installation, but no one can
properly run tgif by "yum install" command".
In particular, on fedora 8 32bit after "yum install tgif" without
problem, if I try to use tgif I got this error:
[user@shrek ~]# tgif
Warning: No type converter registered for 'String' to 'Bitmap' conversion.
Cannot load fontset specified by Tgif.MenuFontSet:
'-*-helvetica-medium-r-normal--12-*-*-*-*-*-*-*,-alias-*-medium-r-normal--12-*-*-*-*-*-*-*'.
Warning: Cannot set InitialFont to 'Ryumin'.
SIGFPE signal received.
Using the rpm on tgif's homepage
ftp://bourbon.usc.edu/pub/tgif/bin/linux-glibc/4.1.45/tgif-4.1.45-1.i386.rpm
I'm able to run it properly.
I have contacted the tgif's developers and he has no idea what is the
problem, he said:"
So, I'm guessing that the
executable may be compiled with different flags (or the code
has been modified). I guess it would be difficult to figure out the
differences"
Could you help me please?

Potential bad dependencies: NetworkManager-gnome, totem and system-config-display
by Rahul Sundaram
Hi
While creating the Xfce spin for Fedora 8, I noticed a few packages seem
to have a bad dependency list. NetworkManager-gnome has a hard
dependency on things like gnome-panel and gnome-keyring. Totem has a
hard dependency on gnome-desktop and gnome-themes. system-config-display
has a hard dependency on metacity. Are these really required? Can we fix
these?

Reminder, Alpha freeze is Tuesday the 15th.
by Jesse Keating
As per http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Releases/9/Schedule the alpha
freeze is the 15th. This is a non-blocking freeze, as in we won't be
freezing rawhide. Instead releng will be taking a snapshot (in koji)
of rawhide and using this as the basis for the Alpha release. We will
tag things for this snapshot at our discretion in coordination with
QA. Maintainers can also request things be tagged via
rel-eng(a)fedoraproject.org
Now would be a great time to either land changes you want exposure to,
or fix up those broken deps/upgrade paths/etc...

hardware-support comps group
by Nicolas Mailhot
Hi, (and happy new year)
Would it make sense to create a comps group for packages that need to be
updated regularly for fedora to have good hardware support? (kernel,
sane, xorg drivers, printer drivers, dcraw, etc) And then check
regularly (via a script or human auditing) none of the bits in this
group are stale?
Or is it something best left to the maintainers of each of those
packages?

f8 gripe#2: why did f8's pm-hibernate regress?
by Douglas McClendon
Can someone tell me if there is anything I can do to de-regress f8's
pm-hibernate?
What I mean is that it seems like in f7, pm-hibernate saved the kernel
buffer/filesystem caches as well as the minimal needed stuff. Now in
f8, every time I resume, system performance is crap because everything
needs to be read piecemeal from disk into the caches again.
My analysis is pure speculation based on my understanding of how you can
tune that behaviour with suspend2(tux-on-ice). But it is very noticable
and very annoying and very clearly a f7->f8 change.
