Err... this has worked for, like, ages on my iBook. Gnome even displays
a nice popup-window with the current setting on each keypress. same
for the volume control.
What does #lsof /dev/pmu print? You have probably pbbuttonsd installed
which isn't integrated with GNOME or gnome-power-manager. With these
changes to HAL, all this should "just work" without any configuration.
