Name: Andrew Boyce-Lewis
Location: State College, Pennsylvania
Profession: Student... for now.
System and Network Admin
Companies: Penn State University Physics Department
Conduit-it(.com)
Goals: To help out, promote and improve Fedora obviously :-).
Specifically, I am interested in the amd_64 port of fedora as well as HA
packages such as LVS. Other interests include spamassassin, bind and
php.
Qualifications: Linux user and fanatic since 1997, Admin since 1999. I
got my start in linux with slackware but switched to redhat when I
actually had to support linux. I am responsible for a number of redhat
installations (server and workstation) and have experience with linux on
a number of architectures. Experience with design construction of linux
based beowulf clusters (well, only one really, but it was pretty big).
Currently working with HA technology as it applies to web and database
service. I suppose that you have no real reason to trust me, other than
the fact that I am willing to start from the bottom and work hard.

"Exim is not designed for storing mail for dial-in hosts. When the
volumes of such mail are large, it is better to get the messages
Ždelivered¡ into files (that is, off Exim's queue) and subsequently
passed on to the dial-in hosts by other means."
This makes exim a rather poor choice for a default MTA for me ;)
imho sendmail is nice as the default MTA, making it forward to your
ISP is rather easy..

I am looking in the MySQL 4 tarball. Exactly what license document do you
mean? COPYING.LIB is still the LGPL.
Has anyone actually asked MySQL to clarify this, or did they make any
announcement of it?
Their web site says that their (awful) C++ wrapper of the client library is
still LGPL:

Why is the fedora.us (Fedora Extras) repository growing so slowly??
by Jaap A. Haitsma
Hi,
First of all I want to mention that I'm very grateful for what the
people in Fedora Extras are doing.
I noticed that the number of packages in Fedora Extras (I'll use this
name to refer to the repository at fedora.us for the rest of this mail)
is growing rather slowly on average 2 package announcements a day for
november (which are both updates and new packages).
Also I noticed that the QA queue is really full. 295 packages are
waiting for QA. And Warren Togami seems to be the owner of about 80
percent of these. This guy must be making 40 hour days.
So I think he needs some help if we want to make fedora extras live up
to what's in the FAQ (Second bullet)
How does Fedora differ from FreshRPMS or other repositories?
* Fedora apt/yum enforces GPG signature checking for your protection.
* All other repositories are made by a single person. Fedora can
have a lot more packages, and of higher quality, because we have have
many package developers working together on a common goal.
What I understand is that QA has to be approved by two developers and
one of a trusted fedora.us developer which check the spec files and stuff.
If there aren't too many developers this can take quite a while I guess.
I for one (as a non packager) wouldn't mind testing binary packages
which are in the testing or unstable queues and I'm interested in.
My proposal would be, to have packagers post a message that a RPM is in
the testing or unstable queue and needs testing. Normal users can then
just test if they work well and send a message back on the fedora-test
list if it works or doesn't. I saw that in Bugzilla that QA/packager
people are doing all this.
In my opinion this would save a lot of time for the real QA people,
because most of the bugs will be gone.
I think this is more or less how the testing of Fedora Core worked.
Any thoughts??

Exim packages
by Nigel Metheringham
Hi,
I have for some time maintained a set of rpms for the exim MTA package
(see http://www.exim.org/ ). The rpms are stashed on
ftp://ftp.exim.org/pub/rpms-for-exim/ and have been relatively widely
used or forked. A variant of those rpms were used for the exim package
on the old Red Hat powerpack (is that the right name) CDs.
I'd like to move these rpms to a distribution set that allows them to
easily maintained (from the point of view of the end user), hence
looking at pushing these into the fedora project.
Currently the release part of the rpm tags would not fit the fedora
naming conventions. At present I intend to keep the current set until
the package version number changes and then shift the release tag so as
not to get version confusion between existing packages and fedora
repository ones.
The exim rpm spec file builds on everything from RH6 through FC1
including the RHEL 2.1 & 3 versions - these are autodetected at build
time. A tag is added to the release part to specify what OS base we are
building to. Since exim has a number of build option - choice of
database interfaces, perl integration etc - a good number of sub
packages are built, the intention being you install exim, exim-mon
(optional), exim-doc (optional) and one of the exim-* packages with the
particular functionality you require (exim-base for most people).
Comments, flames, recommendations on integration would be welcome - well
not so much the flames unless they are constructive ones :-)
Nigel.

Yes alternatives is supported in everything from RH6 onwards. Just
taken some patches (not in the packages on exim.org yet) to fix a couple
of buglets in alternatives.

Could be done on the package(rpm) level.
Making some packages contain the same file(s), and Conflicts: and a few
more tricks. That will only allow one of several alternatives to be
installed at the time though.
