Hi,
I'm running KDE Plasma 5.17.0 with F22. I use the open source 'radeon' video driver. I have compositing disabled and I use a solid color as my desktop background.
After some fiddling I've gotten it to where it's 99% usable, but every once in a while Plasma crashes. I've not noticed anything in particular that I might have done to trigger the crash. So far it's always restarted itself automatically, but it's slightly annoying to have to pause what I'm working on while I wait for Plasma to come back. ~/.xsession-errors doesn't have any obvious clues (the lack of timestamps doesn't help) and I don't know of anywhere else to look.
I have KDE5 set up with 2 activities. The first activity has 9 virtual desktops. I often switch between virtual desktops, usually successfully, but every once in a while Plasma will crash while I'm switching desktops. I also see crashes that don't involve switching desktops, such as after changing something in System Settings.
Do you have any suggestions of what I might do to troubleshoot and/or solve these crashes? Might I see improved stability if I upgraded to F23 or am I better off sticking with F22?
Thanks, Dave

I'm afraid that KDE in Fedora 23 is in the same sorry state. Don't bother. Personally I'm seriously considering move to LXQT.
I wish I had better news. Dariusz

with the latest 5.5.x it becomes useable
only some memleak drigves me crazy where *anything* in the DE becomes very slow after 1 or more days running a KDE session and after logout/login all is fast again

No problem, I understand. I'd have stuck with F21 (its KDE 4.x was nice and solid) but I thought I better keep up-to-date for security purposes.
For what it's worth, I've been on F22 for a couple of weeks now and it seems like KDE has been a bit more stable since 'dnf update' installed a few dozen k* RPMs a few days ago.
Just took a look at the LXQT home page...I might give LXQT a try.
Thanks!
Dave

LXQT, it seems, is not yet ready in Fedora. On one system, it didn't setup network applet. I installed it on this very laptop and menu items are missing. I am setting up i3 because I can't go from one broken desktop environment to another one.
Cinnamon seems pretty stable sleek and well laid out. I was using LxQT, but was too busy, etc. I have been checking in on KDE from time to time, and it's much more stable but still has a ways to go - at least on my system.

But when there is a crash you should see something like
KCrash: Application 'plasmashell' crashing...
The lines before that could be useful to troubleshoot the issue.
Ciao

Thanks, that's good to know. Here's what I have have in ~/.xsession-errors before the most recent plasmashell crash:
"Plural argument to message {and %1 other window} not supplied before conversion."
/* multiple occurrences of previous message, then these messages ... */
QXcbConnection: XCB error: 3 (BadWindow), sequence: 31017, resource id: 119568700, major code: 15 (QueryTree), minor code: 0 Application::crashHandler() called with signal 11; recent crashes: 1 KCrash: Application 'plasmashell' crashing...

FWIW, I too have had the occasional plasma crash. As a matter of fact every time I log in and start a GUI application such as chrome or thunderbird it would crash the first time. Then it would become stable after that until the next logout/login.
That was the case, until today. Today after a the latest updates this no longer happens! Fancy my surprise.
So, in increments, things are getting better. At least for me.
