am i the only one since years which desktop get's creeply
slow after some hours
* moving windows sucks
* changes in the systray resuling in flickering
and the reason is pretty clear that i make heavily use of
the systray (thunderbird notifies, music player, knemo
with 4 interfaces, long open apps with "alltray")
currently after a hour the same again because i tried to send
someone with kopete a file via jabber which is away and in this
case you have a spinning wheel in the systray
* logout
* login
* all is fine again
on machines with a i7-3770 CPU @ 3.40GHz and 16 GB RAM
this behavior is ridiculous because someone would expect
having his KDE session open until the next kernel-update

it are not really the apps and there is nothing which shows
really memory, but this me be masked somewhere in cache
since there are also virtual machines having their RAM masked
in "cache" if i look at "free -m"
if have no real idea what it is
but seeing yesterday the behavior after a hour with the
spinning wheel from the kopete-transfer in the systray
made it very clear that heavy use of the systray makes
KDE *terrible* slow after some hours which must not happen
on this type of power-machine :-(
this happens in my usecase since years on any sort of machine
and made notebooks often terrible to use at all

really memory,
After googling a bit more, looks like xrestop is probably a better tool
tool to use here. Anyway, similar stuff seen on debian

Hi,
FYI: I got this terrible slowness with kopete too, when a new message - with
animated icon - was waiting for my response. The longer I waited, the slower
the system became. This happend in Fedora 17. In 18+ I'm using ktp - no
animated icon - and haven't seen any slowness recently. May be switching to
ktp is an option?

ktp is currently a joke compared to kopete and since it does
*not* minimize to systray at all no wonder that this does
not get triggered, but that's one point more which makes
it unuseable beside the fact it refuses to connect to FB-chat
and our own jabber-server
and even if - kopete is *not* the only application which triggers
the behavior, i use the systray *heavily* and having open a MPD
client which shows song-progress and so on in the systray you
get the same after a few hours and the more apllications are
in the systray the worser it gets

ktp is currently a joke compared to kopete and since it does

No need to. You are not disconnected when you close the contact list. It's
just a GUI for some daemons that keep the connection in the background. You
can add the "Instant Messaging Presence" applet to systray to get notifications
abut incomming messages and to open contactlist, like with Kopete.

Hmm, could be Telepathy limitation. Have you tried with Empathy?

Does CPU consumption increase with time as well? Could you try attaching gdb
to plasma-desktop when it's /really/ slow/stuck and provide a backtrace?

i love the way how kopete works as it is and the *current*
behavior of ktp is IMHO more a technical preview

no, there is no CPU load, thhere is load avg, the is no
f**ing load at all which explains why the DE starts
creep around on a horse-power machine :-(

sounds like exactly my problem
why does KDE upstream not address such major bugs?
this exists at least 1.5 years and must be noticeable
by anybody which has his machine run 365/7
