Hello, I have just install F16 and its latest update. Then I set up my kmail. All my mail are IMAP connection (multiple IMAP servers). For some reason my kmail (running inside Kontact) keep being stuck on "Retrieving Folder Content", no matter what I tried. I tried clicking different folders, kill kontact / kmail from process manager, log out / re-login, and even reboot. And everytime I open kmail, at first it shows whatever message it happens to show, but whenever I tried to click to a different message, it gets stuck again to "Retrieving Folder Contents." Has anyone been seeing this ? I found this bug below from googling but there doesn't seem to be any resolution.

Thanks. AC

You shouldn't ever have to kill anything. Is kmail hung at that point?
Tried doing akonadictl restart ?

No, kmail still responding e.g. when I clicked around different folders, the message windows just keep showing "Retrieving Folder Contents."
Apparently this happens when there is IMAP folders with large numbers of messages (e.g. order of thousands). For example if I delete this particular account from kmail, kmail seems to behave better. And I use this gmail account for Fedora-KDE and Fedora-Users list (which obviously has tons of messages). I just added this account back, and the stuck behaviour comes back... <sigh>. I am wondering if anyone else is seeing this.

This is the same behavior I've seen for the last several months, and after several tries to get things working even from fresh accounts, I have abandoned kmail.

Me, also with huges folders (like you: those that contain mailing list messages).

So apparently this is just an overhead we have to pay with big folders...
I decided to let kmail does whatever it was doing in the seemingly stuck mode with "retrieving folder content" from a wired network (I was on a wireless before) and let it run it course. Eventually it finish and now it seems to behave better.
As I replied to Rex, Kmail did not hung, but there was no indication it was doing anything either. Apparently it was doing something, probably trying to sync or cache the headers of all the messages since I set up from fresh. Probably there's a better solution to somehow inform the user that it's still doing something, and for e.g. prioritize to download and then show the message being selected before continuing to try caching everything else, then just showing the message "Retrieving folder content" for a loooong time.

Well I spoke too soon. I came in this morning and open kmail, and it gets stuck again... for no apparent reason. This is getting ridiculous. I still have an old laptop running F12 and KDE / Kmail there works much more reliably than this one...

It seems that I'm not the only one. I saw this too: http://lists.kde.org/?l=kdepim-users&m=132548614214176&w=2
Now the workarounds for me is by doing: "akonadictl restart" (as mentioned by Rex) from another terminal. At least there's that...

As a matter of interest, is this any large folders, or just those with new messages? I moved most of my inbox to another folder, and that seemed to stop KMail being stuck in this way.
I've often wondered - and asked here - how I can archive large folders (eg email from 8 years ago), in such a way that they could be retrieved and read by KMail reasonably easily, but are removed from KMail's list of folders?

I haven't explicitly check on that of course, but I don't know if it makes any different.

For this I actually archive yearly (e.g. inbox-2011, inbox-2010) or bi- annually and seems to be OK. But for my case even for several years the size my actual personal inbox is nothing compared to, say, the size of my folder for Fedora-User list for 1 year without any pruning.
