The problem is once I click the bar, the breadcrumbs never seen to
come back (for that session). So then I'm left wanting a simple up
button.
Na, there is a little icon left of the bar edit line. Klick it and you
get the breadcrumbs are back (at least with KDE 4.2).
And for the up-arrow, you can configure your toolbar (left click on
the toolbar bar and chose the configure menu entry).
