Hi
I need some help to sort this issue please.
Since the last update to plasma on Fedora 22, when I try to start konsole by right clicking on the desktop background and selecting 'konsole' it opens a konsole window but that window contains only a screenshot of what was under the window when it was created! (The bar at the top of the window says Konsole and the konsole icon is in the top left corner of the bar).
If I start konsole from the kickoff menu or from my panel launcher button konsole opens normally and after that subsequent launches from the desktop right-click menu work, but my first stuck konsole is still stuck with the screenshot.
Any ideas how to diagnose this?
Thanks

I've had similar on F23: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1291260
I find it happens with both launching from the desktop menu and from the panel (and it's actually not always the first one either). I don't get this on my machine at home, only my work one. One difference is that home is a single screen setup but work is a dual screen setup.

Thanks for BZ'ing this and drawing my attention to it. I've cc'ed myself to that bug.
As Florian Sievert says in a later post to this thread, I find the behaviour somewhat unpredictable and not reproducable every time. I thought I had fixed it once by clearing our my konsole resource files but it came back again.

Hi there,
I observed this as well, but wasn't able to reproduce this reliable. When I close the konsole and then restart it again the same approach, it is working fine. So it is not always reproducable as it was described in the issue. Just from my observations, I had this issue on the secondary monitor and just when composite (OpenGL) is acticated. So do you also have dual head system and NVIDIA?
Best regards, Florian

I can confirm that I see this on dual head systems and that its not reliably reproducable behaviour. I've seen it on systems with nvidia proprietary driver and on systems with the regular Intel driver.
In a way its good to know that others see this too, so its not something pathological to my setup!
I'll experiment with changing the compositing settings next time I see it to see if that helps.

Same issue here -- it appeared exactly when I had upgraded to both Plasma 5.5.0 and KDE frameworks 5.17 on Dec 17, 2015. The problem was not fixed by any F22 updates until Jan 3, 2016.
If I start konsole from the kickoff menu or from my panel launcher button konsole opens normally and after that subsequent launches from the desktop right-click menu work, but my first stuck konsole is still stuck with the screenshot.
The bug is 100% reproducible on my system:
- First konsole opened is broken exactly as described by Roderick. I should add that this konsole window is not responsive to keyboard input either. - Second konsole opened works just fine - Third konsole opened works just fine - After closing all konsole instances, the first konsole opened again has the problem
Behavior is exactly the same regardless of whether I start konsole from the kickoff menu, the launcher, or from a shortcut on the panel.
This is on a laptop with LVDS and external monitor (intel + nouveau drivers), but I doubt the presence of the external monitor is "triggering" the problem (I haven't tried LVDS only).
Compositor Settings: Rendering backend: XRender

I can't reproduce the problem on a single monitor up-to-date F23, so plasma 5.5.1 (but I'm not using the default Breeze-based set of themes), using OpenGL 3.1/GLX for the compositor. I would suggest to play with the configuration, at least try with the single monitor.

On my up-to-date F22, the choice of Compositor Settings does not make any difference (I tried OpenGL 3.1/GLX as well as OpenGL 2.0.). Besides, XRender is still the only rendering backend that works reasonably well with intel + nouveau.
The konsole issue was clearly introduced when I upgraded to Plasma 5.5.0 and KDE frameworks 5.17 on 17. Dec.
However, the updates-testing repo is already at Plasma 5.5.1 and KF5 5.18, and another thread (see subject "KDE 5.5.2- thanks") suggests that 5.5.2 (in repo kde-testing) is even more stable.
I suspect that we are chasing some transient bugs here, which is not very productive ...
Could someone using Plasma 5.5.1 or 5.5.2 or KF5 5.18 report whether the konsole hang exists for them?
at least try with the single monitor.
Interestingly, LVDS only does not currently work for me, but that's another problem:
When I boot my laptop with LVDS only (external monitor not connected to DP), Plasma comes up briefly at KDE login, but then it crashes, and there is no X at all. In /var/log/Xorg.0, I see
[ 287.125] (EE) intel(0): sna_mode_check: invalid state found on pipe 0, disabling CRTC:21
so I suspect that X is confused when the intel and nouveau drivers are both loaded (which is the case), but there is no external monitor to drive.
Who knows, for LVDS only, I might need to blacklist the nouveau driver ... (This is with kernel 4.2.8-200, I don't think this problem existed with kernel 4.1.3).
Thanks, Fredy
Hi there,
I am confirming your observation and it looks like you found basically the solution why it seems to be gone on my system for a while. I can just reproduce the issue when using "XRender" as composite backend. When switching to OpenGL 2, it seems to be fine (or at least not being reproducable always). So there is IMHO a high chance, this is related to the XRender backend.
