Currently in Fedora for languages with non-Latin scripts
we normally switch between a xkb layout as an input source
for inputting Latin/ASCII characters and an IME for
inputting native characters.
ibus-kkc and ibus-libpinyin both have Latin ("English") input methods.
I think it is more natural for primary users of these IMEs
to use them by default for Latin character input. So I want to
suggest that for F21 we could default Japanese input to use only the kkc
IME
and Chinese to libpinyin IME, ie no additional keyboard layout source
would be needed. Multilingual users might still need an additional
keyboard layout input source and that is still fine. Other IMEs
might also be extended to support Latin input modes in the future:
initially we could do it for those default IMEs that support it.
For example I am already using ibus-kkc for both Latin and Japanese input
and it works well - I toggle easily between direct and ja input.
Perhaps the only change needed for the current IMEs with Latin mode
might be input mode state caching, ie using the same mode as last time.

Hi,
I'm planning to cancel tomorrow's i18n meeting unless anyone has any topics to discuss in the meeting.
Please follow up on this mail if you have anything by next morning.

Fedora i18n Project
Hi,
In last six month we have completed Devanagari (Marathi and Nepali),
Gujarati, Gurmukhi and Malayalam under lohit2 project [1]. We have done
significant improvement in these fonts not only from technical
perspective but also from standards perspective. I am confident enough
to say Lohit follows all standards around fonts and Indian languages and
scripts.
I attended typoday.in [2] conference in last weekend and talked with
people around on lohit2. Happy to see number of people in fonts industry
are aware regarding Lohit fonts. Few people even used Lohit fonts during
the workshop to demonstrate some points. Few people proposed enhancement
by adding more ligature. So we all are going good :)
This is time to do improvements in Lohit Assamese and Bengali.
Followings are improvements we are looking for..
* Removing not required ligatures.
* Rewriting efficient open type tables.
* Support to the "beng" and "bng2" open type script tags.
* Building fonts through feature file (.fea)
* Following AGL specification syntax.
* Testing on Harfbuzz NG, Uniscribe(W8).
* Automated Testing Tool utilization
One of the important task prior to development is to identify
guidelines, specifications for Assamese and Bengali script. We do have
TDIL documents available and will see if there is any other. With these
improvements i am sure Lohit Assamese and Bengali can become standard
reference font for upcoming Bengali fonts project.
Need help from Assamese and Bengali language expert. I know few
already and will ping them for more input during the developments.
Development activity is going to happen in lohit2 [3] git. Feel free to
report bug and propose enhancements.
Best Regards,
Pravin Satpute
