OK, I think I've found the bug, for *me*, kate seems to always use whatever
is defined in
systemsettings5 -> fonts -> Fixed width
and ignores the kate-specific setting for printing. the kate-specific one
*is* used for display in kate though.
Mind filing a (upstream) bug?
