This has bitten me numerous times as well - we really need to get the
KDE sound configuration to unmute ALSA if it's muted (and generally get
the two settings to match). Or do I mean we need PulseAudio to do that
for us?
I've no idea. The fact that that question even needs to be asked speaks
volumes. We have ALSA, Pulseaudio and Phonon (and maybe more). Expecting
that a non-specialist user will understand the role of each of these
things and how they relate to each other is just unreasonable. If a DE
provides a Settings dialogue for sound configuration, it should be able
to deal with the *whole* problem in an integrated manner. The Display
dialogue provides a good example (provided your video card is supported
of course).
