I wouldn't think you'd want sudo here. akonadi should run as you:
[tim@william ~]$ akonadictl restart

I should indeed have omitted "sudo".
However, the fact remains that KMail is in an extremely unstable state.
I just re-booted (for other reasons) and KMail is working fine.
But sometimes it goes into an unuseable state,
for no reason that I can see.
It seems to be connected to akonadi.
