On my netbook, OpenGL works great and Xrender crawls -- on my laptop,
on the other hand, it's the exact inverse. Both using Intel graphics.
It's weird.

I realized I jumped the gun on this question. For some reason it
takes a reboot for effects changes to fully implement. After a reboot
with Xrender enabled things slowed to a crawl and most of the effects
wouldn't work. The only improvement was in the performance of OpenGL
games.
