IMO setting ownership to who's at the console is not the correct paradigm. In many cases the scanner is a shared resource ... like a printer. Consider:

IMO the best solution for now is to set the device permissions to be world read/write.
umm, cmon - the use of the scanner as a shared resource is a MUCH rarer case than the person at the desktop being the person using the device. you have to admit the shared resource is a less common use.
