Re: problems with most recent fc5 (2187) maint.?
by Anne & Lynn Wheeler
i may have found problem with kernel-smp-2.6.17-1.2187_FC5 not mounting other than root filesystem and failing to bring up networking correctly ("mount -a" after logon mounts the rest of the system, and deactivate/activate network interfaces brings things up correctly). this is dell 2400 dual 1ghz processors with 1gbyte memory
i had selinux temporarily set to permissive (for completely unrelated reasons) when doing the install and then switched back to enforcing. during 2187 boot there are some messages about some file operation failed because of permissions.
just tried same smp kernel on dell 8100 3.4ghz processor with hyperthreading enabled. it fails to initialize with two processors. dropping back to smp kernel 2174 correctly initializes for two processors.

I noticed few small glitches with the new FC6t3:
Installation was trouble free. But problems soon started popping up

FC6T3 In isolation
by John Pearson
Mon Sep 18 09:16:14 EDT 2006
At a computer show over the weekend, I purchased a set of vanilla
components, and put together an AMD Sempron box with which to test FC6T3. I
was a location without Internet access, but I had media checked my copy of
the DVD before leaving.
The hardware checks and initial bootup were flawless.
When I got to the Ethernet related dialog, I opted for a static address, not
being sure what would happen otherwise. I disabled the IPv6 connectivity,
but anaconda demanded an IPv6 address anyway. When I could not guess
correctly the form or substance of a valid address, the installation was
aborted.
I tried again, allowing automatic address selection, but making sure the
card was marked inactive. I created the simplest disc allocation scheme
manually, and accepted the default selection of packages. Installation
completed without incident and the firstboot dialog was fine.
[Asbestos underwear on] I normally use a KDE desktop. So I remounted the
installation DVD, and found the Add/Remove Program option. The result was
death from isolation. The program wanted Internet connectivity, while I had
a DVD which should have been good to go.
Shouldn't the installation media be self contained?
Normally, I have access to the Internet during an installation. But does
this mean that a standalone installation is impossible without selection an
'Everything' option on the first go?
Is Fedora Core [Testing or otherwise] unusable on a standalone machine?
Cheers,
JP

Hello,
I was successful in installing FC6 Test 2 x86_64 version installed on my Mac Pro. To get the installation working, do the following:
1. Install Boot Camp and repartition drive 2. Install rEFIt 3. Install FC6 off of DVD with the command line options:
linux irqpoll acpi=force
This resolves the issue seen with the Pioneer DVD Superdrive bundled with the Mac Pros.
4. Wipe out empty partition created by Boot Camp and put your own Linux partition on the hard drive. Install Fedora to normally to the partition. Tell Grub to install to the Linux partition instead of the MBR.
5. After installation is complete, and _before_ you reboot your computer, drop to the shell prompt and run fdisk /dev/sda.
6. In fdisk, check the partition type listed for the partition you installed Fedora to. If it's listed as 0xef (EFI partition) change it back to type 0x82 (Linux partition). Then exit fdisk.
7. Now re-run grub-install to the MBR. At this point, rEFIt protects the GPT, so it's safe to install grub to the MBR.
grub-install -b /dev/sda
8. Reboot the machine. After reboot, do not run the rEFIt partition sync utility, as this will attempt to restore any Linux partitions back to EFI.
9. If successful, upon reboot, the rEFIt boot menu will give you the choice of booting to Mac OS X, or Linux, or your bootable DVD if it's in the drive. If you happen to see extra Legacy boot options, that's okay.

Status of FC6 on Mac Pro?
by Pete Pinter
Greetings all,
I've search the recent archives here and googled for an insight into FC6 support for the quad-xeon based Mac Pro, but came up dry.
Can anyone clue me in as to current status, bootability and/or how I can help with testing to move the markers forward?
My attempt to boot FC6T2 x86_64 DVD seemed to get well into the EFI phase, but subsequently blanked out (S-ATA issue?, dunno).
Any/all insights or pointers greatly appreciated!
Cheers,

No Splash on Login
by Thomas J. Baker
I don't get any splash window/panel/dialog on login. Doesn't matter if
compiz is enabled or not. What should I file a bug against? GDM or what?
Thanks,

FC6T3 Install results
by Gerry Tool
Fresh install from DVD
1. During install had error messages “Error opening /dev/sda. No medium
found.” This occurred for all four slots (sda, sdb, sdc, sdd) in USB
memory card reader. This has never occurred before. Is it useful to
probe these devices during install, perhaps in case they are USB drives
to which an install might occur? I'm not sure the error messages are
useful even then.
2. Selected all 3 software categories plus Fedora Extras. Could not
continue install due to message:
“An error occurred unmounting the CD. Please make sure you're not
accessing /mnt/source from the shell on tty2 and then click OK to
retry.”
I restarted the install and left the Fedora Extras unchecked this time.
Installation proceeded as expected, and customization of packages worked
fine.
Post Install setup went flawlessly.
3. I have a zip drive, in which I have a disk. I clicked on the desktop
Computer icon and then Zip drive icon. A nautilus window opened with /
contents instead of zip drive contents. Second attempt opened Zip
contents. This is repeatable on reboot, but not on logout/login.
4. There is no longer a check box in the nautilus Properties > Behavior
tab to set nautilus to open in browser format by default. This means
each time I want a browser (95% of the time) I need to right-click and
select an option. Is there another way to set the default?
5. The desktop Create Launcher dialog no longer has a URL type.
However, using the file type and setting the Location to an internet URl
does create a proper launcher.
6. Overall appearance is great. The gdm login screen is very sharp,
though some would judge it to be foreboding.
