Blinking in gnome-terminal and xfce Terminal
by Rares Aioanei
Hi all, I encounter a "feature" in gnome-terminal and Terminal in
Rawhide : consider the following code :
#include <stdio.h>
#include <curses.h>
#include <ncurses.h>
#include <stdlib.h>
int main()
{
int ch;
initscr();
raw();/* Line buffering disabled*/
keypad(stdscr, TRUE);/* We get F1, F2 etc..*/
noecho();/* Don't echo() while we do getch */
printw("Type any character to see it in bold\n");
ch = getch();/* If raw() hadn't been called
* * we have to press enter before it
* * gets to the program */
if(ch == KEY_F(1))/* Without keypad enabled this will */
printw("F1 Key pressed");/* not get to us either*/
/* Without noecho() some ugly escape
* * charachters might have been printed
* * on screen*/
else if(ch == KEY_F(2))
printw("F2 Key pressed");
else if(ch == KEY_F(3))
printw("F3 key pressed.");
else if(ch == KEY_F(4))
printw("F4 Key pressed.");
else
{
printw("The pressed key is ");
attron(A_BOLD);
printw("%c", ch);
attroff(A_BOLD);
}
move(5,10);
addstr("this is blink->");
addch('H' | A_BLINK);
refresh();/* Print it on to the real screen */
getch();/* Wait for user input */
endwin();/* End curses mode */
return 0;
}
Well, only in konsole I get the H to blink like it should; in
gnome-terminal and Terminal it shows all the time. What gives?

Re: Slow startup (11.91)

e4defrag - its in e2fsprog's git. Its still an early version and does
not alway succeed with defragmenting files (at least it does never
make things worse), and it depends on kernel-2.6.31.
My partition was quite heavily fragmented after a year of rawhide updates ;)
(and because firefox's places.sqlite had over 1800 fragments, instead
of ~11, which made it painful to use).

Dracut Questions
by Petrus de Calguarium
I read that dracut is to replace initrd and nash in f12.
I installed f12α, but dracut was not there, only the old
initrd and nash.
If I want to change to dracut, what do I do? Which packages
do I need to install, etc?
Does it make an initram on the fly, or do I install a
package? I noticed that there is dracut-kernel and dracut-
generic available, along with a host of other packages.
Do I uninstall nash and initrd? Or do I keep them as a fall-
back? If so, how would I configure that? What changes do I
make to grub.conf and elsewhere to enable dracut and disable
nash/initrd?
A concern: Does it work reliably? I am not going to face a
situation where I boot and encounter a kernel panic and be
unable to get into my system because there is no initram or
something? That could be almost impossible to solve :-(

Fedora KVM not ready for Prime Time.
by Chuck Forsberg WA7KGX
I installed Saturday's rsync Rawhide 64 and took KVM
for a test drive as recently suggested.
The first hiccup was not finding anything virtual in the
System manu (under Gnome). "kvm" from the slell
prompt didn't do anything either. OK, so it is in
another menu.
Once I started virt-manager I could find no way to
create a vdisk with an arbitrary path name (e.g.,
a file on a mounted partition with sufficient free space).
So I settled for the default.
I then installed XP Pro in the virtual machine. The
virtual machine stopped instead of rebooting as
expected.
I then loaded an app I would like to run under a virtual
machine: OSWeather+VS-20090812-0046.msi. This
app uses a USB port (doesn't everything nowadays?)
to read data from their weather station.
I poked around the virt-manager menu structure but
could find no mention of USB ports, or even serial
ports!
A little necromancy Googleing unearthed the
-usbdevice option to qemu. I tried running
qemu with various command lines. The good news is that
qemu reported capturing the Oregon Scientific device.
The bad news is that virt-manager did not see this process.
Connecting to qemu with vnc yielded an inert black screen
that exited when I killed qemu.
So the Fedora virtual machine is practically a pre-usb pc,
four to eight usb porta short of a full deck.

Rawhide KVM not ready for Prime Time
by Chuck Forsberg WA7KGX
A few attempts to get XP running under KVM failed.
Finally I loaded a fresh Rawhide 64 and was able
to load XP using the XP profile.
This VM refuses to run if no CD is in the drive.
The first time I tried mapping a network drive resulted
in the Blue Screen of Death. Perhaps SElinux - so no more
SELinux.
The Windows ftp program could log in but not get a
directory listing.
It turns out the i icon is not for information but also
fo modifying the VM. It should have a wrench on it,
not the letter i which is Apple territory anyway.
I mapped the Oregon Scientific weather station USB
address but the Oregon Scientific application could
not see the device. I mapped the upstream usb
controller also but to no avail.
No sound but I have not investigated that yet.

Preupgrade from f11 to rawhide leaves around some old stuff
by shmuel siegel
Because of the changes to yum, "yum list | grep installed" reveals old
files that weren't updated to fc12. In my case I get the following list.
Can someone tell me if these should have been updated or if something
should have replaced them? Note the blank components; these are strange.

Tom - I have got bind-chroot working is several F11 machines and the
way I did it was as follows:
1) Install bind-chroot
2) Add lines to the end of /etc/sysconfig/named
ROOTDIR=/var/named/chroot
OPTIONS="-4"
The latter if you need to restrict to ipv4, and the former defining
where the chroot jail is.
3) I then install system-config-bind and execute it - this gives an
initial set of basic files in the right place in the chroot.
4) Start the named service to see if it works. If it grumbles about
rndc then check that rndc.key in /etc/rndc.key is the same as in
/var/named/chroot/etc/ and if not then copy the file from
/var/named/chroot/etc/rndc.key to /etc/
Then add your own zone files and customisation for your own situation.
This seems to work without problems for me in F11.
