Is it safe to assume you were on rawhide?
If so - then you are ahead of f16 final.

I did upgrade from F15 to F16 last week (well prior to F16 alpha) with: # yum --releasever=16 --disableplugin=presto distro-sync --nogpgcheck
Since then I have been doing daily updates with yumex on fedora and updates-testing repos (as shown above).
Then F16 alpha was announced on Tuesday. I tried this entry today, on Wednesday, even right now, with those downgrade results (as shown above): # yum distro-sync
So, am I still ahead of F16 alpha from the point of view of 'yum distro-sync', but not from the point of view of yumex daily updates done on fedora and updates-testing ? If so: - should it be so (discovered a problem in 'yum distro-sync') ? - how can I fix this dichotomy ?

I'm seeing basically the same thing on a cleanly installed F16 x86_64, except that today there are plymouth updates that get rid of the attempted plymouth downgrades. I would just ignore it for now.
plymouth-0.8.4-0.20110822.1.fc16.x86_64 plymouth-core-libs-0.8.4-0.20110822.1.fc16.x86_64 plymouth-graphics-libs-0.8.4-0.20110822.1.fc16.x86_64 plymouth-plugin-label-0.8.4-0.20110822.1.fc16.x86_64 plymouth-plugin-two-step-0.8.4-0.20110822.1.fc16.x86_64 plymouth-scripts-0.8.4-0.20110822.1.fc16.x86_64 plymouth-system-theme-0.8.4-0.20110822.1.fc16.x86_64 plymouth-theme-charge-0.8.4-0.20110822.1.fc16.x86_64
Looking in https://admin.fedoraproject.org/updates/ at some of the mentioned packages (for example, cups or curl) it looks like the packages that want to be downgraded were obsoleted or otherwise deleted, but most if not all of them will soon get updates to fix the problem. So unless you're having problems with specific packages you can just wait for it to fix itself, otherwise distro-sync the offending packages.
