I upgraded FC3 from FC3rc1 and I don't have sound. The module is
snd-via82xx, its loaded and the sound config tool detects it but still I
get no sound. When I try to raise the sound on the volume control applet
it just goes down. When I try to open the controls I get "Sorry no sound
devices/elements found"... I removed the module and inserted it again
but no luck. Everything worked fine with rc1. Anyone having similiar
problems?

What soundcard do you have? What motherboard? I'm using the
snd-via82xx with no problem with my Abit A8V & Asus K8V.

oh you did an upgrade. You need to do a full reinstall. Don't know but
upgrading a FC pre Final to Final don't work out well.

Acctualy what I did was a reinstall. I checked the Install not the
Upgrade field in anaconda. I just added all my previous mount points to
my /boot, /home and / partition and did an install.

We had this argument last week. UPGRADES ARE SUPPOSED TO WORK !
UPGRADES ARE NOT AN EXCUSE FOR SOMETHING NOT WORKING !
Arangel: I wouldn't re install Linux. Someone gave me the upgrade
excuse when I had a sound problem. I re installed and it didn't make
any difference.
I had a sound problem with a laptop with an intel-8x0m device.
I added snd-intel8x0m to /etc/hotplug/blacklist and rebooted.
I went to the KDE->ControlCenter->Sound & Multimedia-> Sound System-
Enable.
Then I went to KDE->System Settings->Soundcard Detection. It detected
my soundcard and it has worked ever since.

because we may decide to _downgrade_ certain components between test
releases or before a final. Oh and please stop screaming, this
hurts ;-).
Not that I would advise reinstalling to fix such a problem either.

Nobody has ever mentioned downgrading packages prior to release before.
Is there a list of such downgrades somewhere ?
Let me ask this: if Fedora Core 3rc5 was the last one anyone tested and
THEN the release team decided to downgrade some packages, when was the
"downgraded" release ever tested ??????
I don't mean to shout and I don't mean to create hurt feelings, but I
really think the release/testing process could be dramatically
improved.
BTW: I ran a software team that developed about a million lines of VB
for a Windows app. We weren't perfect either, but we were pretty good.

I don't think so and I didn't say that I knew of particular downgrades
in this case ;-).

Using downgraded packages usually means using packages which were known
to work before, like in "we rather use this older version that doesn't
have these features but doesn't have those bugs as well".

How? By concentrating on real-world scenarios (upgrading from proper

Honestly: If you want to get help with a problem, such "from-above-talk"
ain't gonna help ya. We do take criticism seriously but only if it is
constructive -- tell us how you think something can be improved instead
of telling us that something could be improved (without the slightest
idea how, even we can't do better ;-).
A few hints: AVOID TYPING IN ALL CAPITALS. People will tell you not to
scream at them and/or ignore you. Avoid excessive punctuation!!!!!!!
People will only think you're using an exclamation mark because you
don't have a point.

how it could work on fc3rc1 with the same module and not work on fc3
final. :0

I'm thinking udev could be this issue. I don't see how it doesn't work
though. None of the via82xx driver didn't change between rc1 & rc5 in
the kernel. If you must just go to alsa-project.org and download and
install the drivers from there (they will replace the current kernel
drivers). My take is that the Upgrade option from any test release
(rc2) is just going to give unneed headache. I keep my home and
directory on a seprate partions, backup need data.

Downloading and compiling alsa didn't work either. I formated / and
installed fc3 from scratch, sounds works fine now, using the same module
- snd-via82xx... Wierd. :0

Ummm... interesting... "snd-intel8x0m" is the modem driver.
"snd-intel8x0" is the sound driver that I added to the
/etc/hotplug/blacklist. Sound works fine now...
