Fedora Branding Fonts
by Máirín Duffy
Hi folks!
I put together a wiki page on our Fedora font discussion from our team
meeting on Tuesday:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Design/Fedora_Branding_Fonts
Here's a summary of the page, but please feel free to modify it and add
any additional font suggestions you've got! We'll collect font
suggestions at next Tuesday's meeting as well!
The Problem
===========
MgOpen Modata doesn't support accent marks very well. For example, I
(Máirín) can't write my own name in MgOpen Modata. This became a big
problem when Luya, one of our designers, put together 'Muffin', the
French Fedora Community magazine. Luya ended up using the font Comfortaa
for Muffin so the French language was understandable!
Another problem, somewhat orthogonal to the i18n problem, is that the
logotype for the Fedora project is Bryant2, a closed and quite expensive
font.
Requirements
============
* The font must support accent marks for the Latin-based character
sets we support.
* The font must be open source. If a suitable 'free' font is
found, we must come to an agreement on changing the license to
one acceptable for inclusion on Fedora with the font author
before it may be used.
* The font shouldn't be too much of a departure from our brand.
Ideally the headline font could replace the Bryant2 in our logo
without much non-designer notice!
The Proposal
============
We should put together a proposal for the following fonts:
* Official Headline Font - to be used both on-screen and in print.
* Official Screen body text font - to be used in on-screen media
(websites, electronic docs, etc.)
* Official Print body text font - to be used in print media, such
as newsletters.
* CJKV headline font - to coordinate
* Indic headline font - to coordinate
In the design team meeting on 29 June 2010, our initial cut at a
proposal (without much research into alternative fonts) was:
* Official Headline font - Comfortaa or Quicksand or Arista 2.0
* Official screen body text - Droid Sans
* Official Print body text - Droid Serif
Suggested Fonts
===============
Comfortaa
Quicksand
Droid Sans
Droid Serif
Arista 2.0

Is it just me, or has the nightly compose vanished from the server?

Please allow me to introduce myself
by Emily Dirsh
Hi, I'm new to the design list, and I'm excited to contribute. My
experience is primarily in web design (including coding html/css), but I
also do a good bit of logo design and some t-shirt/merch design. Please
let me know how I can help!

Kickstart proposal
by Chris Jones
Just a progress update. I'm still working on the file and hope to get
a final proposal uploaded this weekend. I've been flat out at work and
trying to juggle development work somewhere in between has been quite
difficult, hence the delay.
But as mentioned, I should be all good to have a proposal soon.

Fedora 14 Concept Decision
by Máirín Duffy
I double- and triple-counted our votes today - each voter picked their
top 3 concepts - and the winner is Kyle Baker's concept for Fedora 14
with 9 votes.
So our next big deadline is 30 July 2010 - a little less than a month -
to put together a wallpaper based on Kyle's concept for Fedora 14
alpha.
There were some suggestions for improving Kyle's design discussed in the
meeting today. The sources for the graphic, which consist of a Blender
file and a Gimp XCF, are available here:
http://fedorapeople.org/~kybaker/F14_wallpaper/
Please, feel free to grab the sources for this concept and remix and
tweak and play so we can get as many ideas as possible for moving
forward, and get a kick-ass wallpaper for F14 alpha. Using those files,
moving forward some of the following suggestions could be addressed for
F14 alpha:
∘ needs more fedora blue
∘ needs more blue instead of black
∘ needs more shiny things
∘ too dark
∘ favorite is the last one
∘ I show it to some users and the first comment was that it's kind of
dizzy
Here's the full rundown of vote counts:
• 9 votes Kybaker
Feedback: (see above)
• 8 votes Schendje
Feedback:
∘ shape is too rough but it could be fixed
∘ fractal should be smaller and placed in different position
∘ concept has potential, it will be interested with a
combination of first kyle concept and jaymes Ayre
∘ fractal is too big
• 6 votes Jayme's concept
Feedback:
∘ needs to be more alive
∘ it's a little plain
∘ good potential to work with because SVG
∘ kind of generic - a design often used in wallpapers
• 3 votes Tatica's atom concept
Feedback:
∘ needs to be less FC6-like
∘ atomos is interesting but it remains solar somehow
• 1 vote Mythcat concept
Feedback:
∘ not the particular execution maybe, but... the bubbly threads, like
trails, weaving together, uh... not sure exactly what it is but it
reminds me of stigmergic collaboration wrt ants and such
Voters:
mizmo, nicubunu, kylebaker, tatica, finalzone, mbenitez, schendje,
mchua, jrezni

06 Jul 2010 Design team meeting summary
by Máirín Duffy
Highlights;
1 - Fedora 14 Default Wallpaper Concept
We picked Kyle Baker's proposal as the default wallpaper for Fedora 14.
(more at:
http://lists.fedoraproject.org/pipermail/design-team/2010-July/002772.html
2 - Fedora Branding Fonts
We decided to try out Comfortaa as a titling font, and Droid sans for
body text tentatively. Both Muffin (Fedora-fr community magazine) and
the newest Design team bounty (Fedora presentation template) will be our
testbed for us to decide how we like these fonts.
We could potentially change the Fedora logotype to the FLOSS titling
font we choose, but that will need to involve Red Hat approval as the
trademark is owned by Red Hat. Just something to consider.
3 - Trac tickets
This was a very productive trac week. Nicu completed
https://fedorahosted.org/design-team/ticket/141 with a great blog post
on hackergotchi design:
Good Hackergotchis for Everyone
http://nicubunu.blogspot.com/2010/07/good-hackergotchis-for-everyone.html
Jef completed https://fedorahosted.org/design-team/ticket/55 with a
great blog post & wiki page on hackergotchi banners:
Introducing Hackergotchi Ribbons
http://jefsblog.wordpress.com/2010/07/04/introducing-hackergotchi-ribbons/
Hackergotchi Ribbons Wiki Page
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Hackergotchi_ribbons
For next week, Pierros will be focusing on ticket #138 and ticket #139
for identifying missing hackergotchis and hackergotchis needing
improvement. Also, Jef will take on ticket
https://fedorahosted.org/design-team/ticket/142 with Nicu's (cc'ed)
help.
4 - Marketing team design team member interviews
The marketing team will start off design team member interviews with
Luya. Luya's interview will focus on the Fedora-fr Muffin magazine
project, show some screenshots of the design, maybe have a highlight on
Scribus.
The next victi^W willing volunteers :) up (not in any order) are:
- Interview with Nicu Buculei on how he got started with Open Clip Art
and also highlighting openclipart.org as a tool for designers (maybe
have a sidebar on OCAL/Inkcape integration feature?), maybe explaining
public domain and SVGs?
- Interview with Tatica Leandro on her Gimp podcasts and how they are
used in SA high schools, and maybe do a highlight on using Gimp as a
tool.
- Interview Jef van Schendel on how he got started with the design team
via Design Team bounty, maybe highlight open office as a tool since he
used that for his bounty?
- Martin Sourada / Nicu Buculei / Pierros Papadeas - interview on their
presentation of the Fedora design team process at Libre Graphics Meeting
2010, maybe with a highlight on LGM and what it's about and its history?
- Máirín Duffy could talk about how she uses Inkscape to create
UI mockups and show some off for the article.
5 - Other
Mel will ask Matt Jadud, a design professor, on what types of activities
he'd like his students to work on when they help out the Fedora design
team starting in the fall. Based on that, we'll suggest things they can
get involved with.
Michael Beckwidth put together a draft Join page for the design team and
we'll discuss his mockup next meeting:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Join_the_Design_Team
Jef will be putting together some Fedora Summer Coding hackergotchi
ribbons.
