Releases/14/FeatureList - FedoraProject
by irejaul .
These features have been accepted by the Fedora Engineering Steering
Committee<http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Fedora_Engineering_Steering_Committee>
for
the Fedora 14 Release.
<ref>http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Releases/14/FeatureList</ref>
The beta release of Fedora 14 is available for download, Red Hat Release
Engineer Dennis
Gilmore<http://lists.fedoraproject.org/pipermail/devel-announce/2010-September/00...>said
in an e-mail to the Fedora developer mailing list on Sept. 28.
"Mark your calendars, and get ready to break out and have some fun: Fedora
14 will launch in early November," Gilmore wrote. The beta is the
distribution's last development build before its official release
The Fedora 14 "Laughlin" release features the
SPICE<http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Features/Spice> (Simple
Protocol for Independent Computing Environments) framework, a tool for
creating virtual desktops. SPICE offers encryption, accelerates
two-dimensional graphics, supports audio playback and recording, and detects
video with MJPEG streaming within a virtual environment. The framework also
comes with a library of X Windows, Windows XP, Windows Live and Windows 7
drivers.
Fedora 14 is based on the Linux Kernel 2.6.35, which provides direct I/O
support for btrfs (b-tree file system) graphic stacks improvements and the
ability to spread incoming network loads across CPUs. Ubuntu's current beta,
Maverick Maven, is also on the same kernel.
The distribution has updates for several programming languages, including
support for D, Python 2.7 and Perl 5.12. Rakudo
Star,<http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Features/Rakudo_Star> an
early implementation of the Perl 6 specification, is also included.
System admins can look forward to extended utilities for remote or
powered-off management of servers using the IPMI (Intelligent Platform
Management Interface) protocol.
The Fedora Engineering Steering
Committee<http://meetbot.fedoraproject.org/fedora-meeting/2010-09-14/fesco.2010-09-...>
met
on Sept. 14 and decided to remove the next-generation systemd session
management as default from Fedora 14 "to give more time to fix small issues
and docs and general polish." Instead, Fedora 14 will return to the Upstart
and SystemV init defaults.
Testing will continue with systemd, which offers faster startup and
on-demand loading and unloading of services, to be included in Fedora 15,
expected in April or May 2011. The beta includes a tech preview of systemd
for administrators interested in checking out the tool.
Laughlin includes KDE's Plasma Desktop 4.5 and GNOME Desktop 2.32, and
offers alternative environments such as Sugar and MeeGo, <http://meego.com/> a
visually rich netbook user interface from a project jointly sponsored by
Intel and Nokia.
Developers can expect enhanced and improved graphics handling, such as JPEG
compression and decompression for faster loading and saving of images.
During a Fedora Graphics Test Week, testers and beta users are encouraged to
focus on video driver support. Sept. 28 testing will focus on the
open-source Nouveau driver for Nvidia chips, Sept. 29 testing on Radeon
hardware and Sept. 30 testing on Intel GPUs.
There are 20 new features in Laughlin, which is about half the number of new
features that were in Fedora 12 ("Constantine") and 13 ("Goddard"). Removing
systemd contributed to the much smaller list of new features.
The beta's features are mostly complete and only critical bug fixes will be
pushed as updates before the general release.
Fedora 14 is named after Nobel Laureate and physicist Robert Laughlin,
professor of Physics and Applied Physics at Stanford University. The members
of The Fedora Project, a worldwide community of more than 20,000
collaborators, selected the code name by popular vote.

Spicy Fedora 14 Adds New Linux Flavor
Polishing the Plumbing
By Sean Michael Kerner
The Red Hat sponsored Fedora Linux community distribution is out this
week with the first beta of the Fedora 14 release. The new distribution
updates key applications and introduces new security and virtualization
capabilities as well as support for the latest open source programming
languages.
"A lot of the features in Fedora 14 are more under-the-covers type
plumbing that needed to be done," Jared Smith, Fedora Project Leader,
told /InternetNews.com/. "There are not a lot of new desktop-centric
features in this release."
One new feature that desktop users may benefit from is the SPICE
virtualization support included in Fedora 14. SPICE, the Simple Protocol
for Independent Computing Environment, is technology that Red Hat gained
as part of its acquisition of Qumranet
<http://www.internetnews.com/software/article.php/3769486/Red-Hat-Bets-on-...>
in 2008.

[in the news] Fedora 14 beta released today, aimed as a tablet operating system

Fedora 14 beta released today, aimed as a tablet operating system
Fedora 14 will be officially available in November. Today's new beta
supports MeeGo and desktop virtualization
By Julie Bort
The much anticipated beta of Fedora 14 was released today, with the
final code to be ready in November. It included a few features that may
surprise you. For one, it lets users opt for a MeeGo look and feel. For
another, it supports Red Hat's new desktop virtualization technology.
Taken together, it seems as if Fedora is making itself more useful for
the rising tablet market.
Fedora 14, nicknamed "Laughlin," will be the first Red Hat supported
distribution to let users choose MeeGo
<http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Features/MeeGo_1.0> as their desktop.
MeeGo is a Linux desktop architecture for mobile devices, netbooks,
embedded Linux devices (such as In Vehicle Infotainment systems). It is
based in the GNOME mobile platform but has been beefed up with
additional technologies (Clutter, GUPnP and libsocialweb). Fedora 14
will include the MeeGo Netbook UX specifically for netbook users as a
"user environment that sits of top of Fedora and associated MeeGo core
services. The netbook user interface and user interaction model for the
target devices then is on top of that. ... This expands on the existing
support we've had for Moblin in Fedora 12 and 13. "

Feature profiles and press blog
by Paul W. Frields
Re: our meeting today, I'm going to talk to Kara Schiltz to see if we
can reserve some time slots on the Red Hat press blog to run stories
about our feature profiles.
Although optimally we like those feature profiles to match up 1-for-1
with the videos we produce, unfortunately we ran short on people
available to shoot those videos. That's not by any means a
catastrophe, because we can still create press blog entries that
trumpet the work being profiled.
I'm going to ask about Thursdays preceding our release, since that
essentially gives us a double-whammy with the videos we hope to
release for a couple Tuesdays preceding the release date.

F14 Beta announcement - Needs eyeballs!
by Robyn Bergeron
I've written up the Beta announcement, attempting to breathe a little
bit of life into it so it's not a carbon copy of the F13 announcement:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/F14_Beta_announcement
I would love some feedback and eyeballs ASAP, particularly around the
features (especially Spice!) to make sure I haven't goofed anything
up. If you want to polish, feel free to do that as well. :)
ALSO: I really, really need to figure out how / where to get / make
the referral links.
For example, the link to the F13 feature list looked like this:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Releases/13/FeatureList?wkanF13b <----
how do I get more of this goodness to add to the Beta announcement??
(On that note, it'd be useful to know if we did anything as far as
looking at the referral links we utilized last time around; if nobody
is doing anything with that, we should figure out how to do something
with it, at least figure out if we have procured any interesting
information that way as far as where our traffic is coming from.)
Beta is TOMORROW (yay!!!) so, while I hate to pull the whole "fire
alarm because I'm running late" thing, well.... Fire Alarm because I'm
running late :)
Cheers,
Robyn
