can't install FC6 test3 on new core 2 duo box
by Jeff Stockett
Default options throughout on install:
Mobo: ASRock 775Dual-VSTA
Processor: Core 2 Duo E6300
RAM: 2GB Dual Channel DDR400
HDD: 120GB IDE hard drive on primary bus
Removable: DVD on second bus
The torrent verified ok, and the media says it is ok - but what happens is
when it gets to the part where it says "Preparing installation." then it
appears to just abort the installation and shutdown. The board runs other
operating systems fine - so I don't think it is a problem with the hardware.
Any ideas? Thanks!

pre6 upgrade: X starts, but only the cursor
by sean darcy
After a yum update since from pre 6 X won't start up completely.
Actually X starts - I get the x mouse cursor, and Xorg.0.log looks fine.
But that's it: just the x mouse cursor against a black background.
Tried switchdesk kde ( usually use gnome ) and xfce. Same result.
I downgrade metacity to metacity-2.16.0-4.fc6.x86_64. Again same result.
I've updated to rawhide x86-64 as of today.
I'd file in bugzilla, but I don't even know what to file against.
Any ideas on how to figure this one out would be appreciated.

cpu scaling questions
by Thomas J. Baker
I've got two questions related to cpu scaling. On my laptop I've got a
Core 2 Duo. Can the two cores scale frequencies independently? Most of
the time that doesn't seem like the case but every once in a while, my
cpufreq applets show different speeds. I'm assuming that there is just a
bit of slop involved and the two cores are always the same speed.
On my desktop, I've got Xeon CPUs that support limited scaling; they run
at either 2.8 or 3.4GHz. On FC5, they used to scale on demand but under
FC6 they don't and the cpufreq applet has a manual setting for 2.8 or
3.4 with an automatic setting that is greyed out.
Thanks,
tjb

"alternatives" versus PATH
by Edwin Olson
Fedora has shipped "alternatives" for a while now, but I still don't get it.
Why is "alternatives" better than setting your PATH appropriately? Why
should "alternatives" override your path?
The notion of having an "editor" symlink which points to vim/emacs seems
okay at first, but in practice, who's not going to just type 'emacs'?
If "alternatives" exists for the convenient use of users, I think that
the UI needs work. Every time I need to configure a new alternative, it
takes me quite a while to figure out what all the appropriate flags are
(in particular, the "link" field seems to require knowledge of where
"alternatives" is storing its directory of symlinks-- shouldn't this be
automagic via a alternatives configuration file? The result should be
that you would only need to provide name and path.)
I ask these questions sincerely hoping for answers-- I'm not trying to
be difficult. At the moment, it seems like it'd be saner to NOT have
alternatives, since I don't see what advantages the extra hoop-jumping
yields.
-Ed
PS: My latest experience went like this:
1. installed sun jdk to /opt/jdk
2. export PATH=/opt/jdk/bin:$PATH
3. cd into one of my java code bases
4. ant
5. gcj is invoked by ant, apparently due to alternatives.
6. gcj can't compile my code and I'm sad.

Fedora Core 6 release date slip
by Jesse Keating
We regret to announce a slip of the Fedora Core 6 release schedule. A few
issues are still present that we would like to see fixed before we release.
- Possible ext3 corruption bug
- Installs with 256megs of ram stall
- Package ordering issues on multilib platforms (x86_64, ppc64)
- SELinux issue with updating kernels on ppc platforms
- iscsi based installations not functional
There are obviously other issues and bugs still open, but these are the ones
that are really "blocking" the release. To give enough time to fix these
issues, we've extended the release date 6 days to Tuesday, Oct 17th. Freezes
are still in place (even more so now). Your extra careful testing of rawhide
over the next few days would greatly be appreciated.
Keep an eye on http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Core/Schedule for any changes.

and eventually the machine freezes. This typically happens within 6
hours or so of starting it up, sometimes almost immediatly after start
up. Once it starts giving this error message, any process that tries
to access the file system hangs, and the Alt+SysRq+S emergency sync
doesn't work -- it displays the message that it's trying to sync but
it never finishes. Ctrl+Alt+Delete doesn't work, presumably because
that involves sending signals to processes and such. From what I can
tell, this bug was introduced into the mptscsi driver at some point in
a recent kernel update and has been present in FC5 and FC6 ever since.
I'm really at my wits end -- I have this nice new workstation that I
basically can't use. I've googled and looked on fedora and dell
mailing lists and I've monitored bugzilla but I can't find any mention
of a work-around that I can use. (Someone suggested changing the scsi
transfer rate in the bios but I can't find an option to do that
anywhere on my workstation.) Has anyone else seen this problem? Has
anyone found a work-around? Is someone working on this? Is there any
hope of having it fixed by the final FC6 release?
(Otherwise I guess I'll have to find a distribution with an older kernel.)
Thanks,
