Next thing I'd check is whether the kernel requests the firmware at all.
Enable hotplug logging (edit /etc/hotplug/hotplug.functions, uncomment
the DEBUG line) and keep an eye on /var/log/messages. The hotplug
agents should log a bunch of stuff.
