I don't know what you mean by "basic graphics mode". But I confirmed
your
observation with WS Live. I'm guessing it is trying to start in Wayland
and not
detecting that it isn't in a Wayland capable environment.
Is this still true? About 2 months ago I was trying wayland out in rawhide
on my
virtualbox vm. Ran sluggish as could be but it did run.
