I'm running latest rawhide on Thinkpad X60 (Intel 945 graphics, i810
driver) with no problems similar to what you describe (i.e., can't
boot to level 5, but can boot to level 3).
[root@tlondon ~]# rpm -q xorg-x11-drv-i810 gdm gnome-settings-daemon
xorg-x11-drv-i810-2.4.2-8.fc10.i386
gdm-2.24.0-5.fc10.i386
gnome-settings-daemon-2.24.0-2.fc10.i386
[root@tlondon ~]#
Are you running with or without an /etc/X11/xorg.conf? What messages
in /var/log/Xorg.0.log and/or /var/log/messages?
Do you get the gdm splash screen? The text login screen?

I am out of reach of that computer but I have some questions/points:
1) I think tham mine is not I945
2) I have tested both with xorg.conf and without it..no way. see bug
461772 where you can find some xorg.log files (but not
var/log/messages)
3) I do not understand why only upgrading the kernel I get this
problem of not getting the login screen Ithink the gdm screen)
As I will get that machine I will test again deleting only xorg.conf
file and installing new kernel.
I keep thinking that something strange is happening that shouldn't happen.....
