yum install blah
It will install both blah.i386 and blah.x86_64.
I think this has to be fixed.

I think it's more than annoying. It is first of all, a radical change in
the behavior I'm used to. I bet this is going to surprise a lot of users.

If you do many packages at once, or things get pulled through
dependencies, then
yum --exclude='*.i??6' install ... ....
works too. If you do not plan to even install x86 packages then
putting such exclude into your yum configuration could be an
option.
I agree that it is a bit annoying.
Additionally for some unclear, to me, reasons this is not even
always consistent. Sometimes it will not try to grab extra
packages even when '.x86_64' specification was forgotten.

this happened to me when i upgraded centos4x86_64 to centos5i386. it was
fixed by putting explicitly i386 on repo files, and yum clean, and removing
whatever files in /var/cache/yum mention x86_64. but may be a false positive
:)

The x86_64 repo also contains lots of i386 "multilib" packages.

I don't want to exclude all i386 packages. There are a set of i386 packages
that should nominally be installed on an x86_64 system. I want those. I

You'll have to figure out what that 'set' of packages is. The only thing I

Here is the deal. When you ask yum to install a package (without specifying
arch) it will install any arches of that package available in the repos you
have configured. Both smb4k.i386 and smb4k.x86_64 are in the x86_64 repo,
therefor you get them both. smb4k is considered multilib, because there
is 'smb4k-devel'. So smb4k-devel.i386 is brought in as multilib, which has a
dep on the i386 build of smb4k, thus that is brought in as well.

Actually I have a different problem. I was just fixing up some breakage
in my f7t4 partition by manually installing some things and if I do
something like:
yum install libwhatever.so.1
it only installs the i386 library even though I wanted both. Fortunately
the output from that install allows me to determine that the library
is in the rpm named whatever-libs so I can then:
yum install whatever-libs.x86_64
and get the missing 64 bit version.
