Powerdevil broken?
by Martin Kho
Hi,
In KDE 4.4.0 on my system the screen saver starts after 6 minutes or so.
Display Power Management (performance profile) is set to:
* standby after 20 minutes and
* suspend after 30 minutes.
* power off is disabled
xset -q says:
* Standby: 1200
* Suspend: 1800
* Off: 0
When I disable 'Display Power Management' the message:
'krunner(1598) SaverEngine::enable: Saver Engine disabled'
appears two times in .xsession-errors.
Enabling this option results in exactly the same messages
(Saver Engine disabled)
Removing the config-files didn't do anything. (except a kded4 crash :-))
Anyone else have seen this? Is there somewhere an option I've missed?
Thanks,
Martin Kho

Board SWG questions for Spins Owners
by Matt Domsch
These questions were originally posted to the Spins SIG a couple weeks
ago. At the following SIG meeting, members suggested that these
questions would be better posed to the individual spin owners, or
teams that are working on the spins, in addition to the SIG. I have
collected the mailing lists and individual spin owner names for all
spins, current or historical, and included you in this mail. As a
Fedora contributor with specific interest in using Spins as a method
to reach specific audiences or cater to specific use cases, you are
uniquely qualified to answer these questions. Your time to
thoughtfully answer is appreciated.
As you may be aware, the Fedora Project Board is trying to set a more
clear vision for what Fedora is, and should be going forward. One
aspect of this conversation is Fedora's target audience. As Spins and
Remixes specifically seek to use Fedora to reach a particular audience
or cater to specific use cases, we seek your input to help guide our
thinking.
Your responses to these questions would be appreciated. Fellow Board
member Colin Walters and I have agreed to poll the Spins and report
back to the Strategic Working Group and the Board as a whole.
Board-level Question:
Can Spins/SIGS or Fedora remixes define their own target audience?
Background
The Board has been working on defining a target audience for
Fedora. In response to this, some people feel that Fedora should allow
sub-groups to define their own target audience. Or even more strongly
that Spins/SIGs should be the only groups defining target audience; in
other words, the Board should not be defining one. An example mail
supporting this position is this mail from Toshio [1].
However, the potential conflict between a Board target audience and a
SIG target audience is still theoretical. No SIG appears to have
explicitly disagreed with the "working" target audience proposal.
Possible Solutions
1. Board sets target audience broadly, spins tailor to a subset
thereof.
2. Board sets target audience broadly, spins tailor to either a
subset thereof, or to additional audiences outside that scope so
long as there are no conflicts.
3. Board does not set target audience, leaves it to each Spin to
set their specific target audience.
1. requires spins to be much more than consumers of Fedora
content.
2. audience of some spins may overlap. That's OK.
3. audience of some spins may technically conflict. How to
resolve conflicts? Spins -> FESCo -> Board.
As members contributing to Spins, how do you view the above, and how
would you like to see Spins interact with the larger Project with
respect to defining target audiences?
Board-level Question:
Can Spins/SIGS or Fedora remixes change the code enough to meet their
goals?
Background
In the present situation, Spins must take all of their content from
the official Fedora repositories. Remixes may take content from
wherever, and modify as they see fit, but may not use the primary
Fedora trademarks.
Questions for Spins and the Spins SIG
Given the present situation:
1. Has any Spin found the present situation unduly restrictive?
1. If so, how specifically?
2. Has any Spin found they cannot address their target audience
properly?
1. If so, in what way?
2. Is the root problem that all packages must be in the
official repositories?
3. How are you addressing this today?
4. How would you like to address this in the future?
5. Are the resources you would need readily available?
1. If not, what would you need to properly address this?
6. Is the transition from "Spin" to "Remix" onerous?
1. If so, what can be done to make it less so?

Change default printer setting to duplex
by Armelius Cameron
Hello,
I have several printer setting issues that may be related. My goal is to have
all KDE apps (mainly Okular) to print as duplex: flip on long page, since my
printer can do that.
So here are the obstacles:
1. I try to change printer settings from system-settings. After I change this
in Options for the printer, and hit Apply, I get an error dialog box:
"there was an error during the cups operation 'client-error-forbidden'"
So maybe a problem with a permission. I then did what I know: open a terminal,
su as root, run system-config-printer, and change the settings there. So my
question, why doesn't KDE prompt me for authentication ?
2. After doing that, I checked again under System-settings, printer
configuration, and it seems that it reflected the changes I made. However, under
Okular print dialog, Options, it still says: Duplex Printing: None. Why is
this so ?
Under the same printing dialog, if I click Properties, Advance, I can see that
it has : 2-Sided Printing: Flip on Long Edge (Standard).
So how do I make this the default so that I don't have to go through Options
in the print dialog everytime ? Or is this a bug that should be reported
upstream to KDE ?
Thanks.

Update - incomprehensible Nepomuk messages
by Timothy Murphy
When I yum-upgraded my Fedora-10 system just now,
I got the dread message that Nepomuk Indexing Agents
have been disabled,
and I was advised to go to
<http://userbase.kde.org/Akonadi#Nepomuk_Indexing_Agents_have_been_Disabled>
where I was advised to give the commands
--------------------------------------------
qdbus org.kde.NepomukServer /nepomukserver org.kde.NepomukServer.quit
rm -r .kde/share/apps/nepomuk
nepomukserver
--------------------------------------------
The first two seemed to work, or at least caused no response.
The third gave me the message
--------------------------------------------
[tim@carrie ~]$ nepomukserver
NepomukServer(2425)/nepomuk (server) Nepomuk::Server::enableNepomuk:
enableNepomuk false
--------------------------------------------
This could be written in Sanskrit as far as my understanding goes.
Is it an error message?
I've no idea what Nepomuk Indexing Agents are,
or indeed what Nepomuk is for.
Am I alone?

ThinkPad Hotkeys
by Gregory M. Zysk
I ran across a script that I would like to see implemented in Fedora. It is
located here :
http://linux-hacks.blogspot.com/2009/05/fix-thinkpad-function-keyshot-key...
I have tested it on my T61 running Fedora 12 KDE and it works perfectly!
I am not a technical guy, so I am not sure of the packaging process and the
QA that comes with submitting it, but I am open to learning it. But, it
would be great if someone could help explain or to help get this script
packaged and implemented into the upstream.
Thanks in advance for you assistance!
All the best,
Gregory

Call for Partiticipation Fedora KDE Desktop Edition Talking Points
by Ryan Rix
Hello Everyone,
Talking points are key highlights of the new release. They should be
compelling, but they will not necessarily be comprehensive. There are
different types of talking points for different types of people:
general desktop users/everyone, developers, and sysadmins. They are
meant to provide a short, effective answer to the question, "What cool
stuff is in the latest release of the Fedora KDE Desktop Edition?"
Each cycle, the Marketing team compiles a short list of approximately
three talking points for each of these audiences for the upcoming
release. For this release, we will, with the help of the KDE SIG team,
be creating a set of talking points for the KDE Desktop Edition. For
Fedora 13, they're found here:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/KDE/Fedora_13_Talking_Points
If you have a talking point that you feel meets the criteria found on
the talking points SOP page at
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Talking_points_SOP, add it to the the
table on the F13 page with supporting information. Please make your
changes to the wiki page, so that the Marketing team and KDE SIG can
efficiently capture and consider your input.
The Marketing team and KDE SIG will make final adjustments to the list of
talking points at the KDE SIG meeting on March 2, which will be announced
on the Fedora KDE list and is open to everyone. If you are interested in
attending the meeting, the agenda, location, and time details can be
found at https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/SIGs/KDE/Meetings. Following
the meeting, the finalized list of talking points will be announced,
and posted to https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/KDE/Fedora_13_Talking_Points.
The Marketing team recently standardized SOPs for creating general Fedora
release Talking Points, which this push for KDE release Talking Points is
based off of. You can view a draft of them here:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Talking_points_SOP
Thanks and best

kde-4.4.0 moved to kde(stable), queue'd for updates(stable)
by Rex Dieter
fyi,
In our KDE SIG meeting earlier today, we decided to mark our current batch
of kde-4.4.0 updates for stable repos. I've just moved things to the
kde(stable) kde-redhat repo, and we've queue'd things for fedora's
updates(stable) as well. The latter should get started out for mirrors
sometime within the next day or 2, if all goes well.
Thanks all around. I'll leave out names, I'd go on and on like an academy
awards speech, the music would start playing, I'd maybe start crying and
inevitably forget somebody. So, thanks to everyone who helped make this
happen. You know who you are. :)

p.s. and the good news keeps on coming, looks we'll get to start working on
packaging kde-4.4.1 around the end of the week.

Lost all print ability
by Anne Wilson
Desperate plea for help! For several days now I haven't been able to print
anything at all. I've removed hplip and reinstalled it. Run hp-setup and got
both printers recognised. Checked CUPS settings. At the end of that neither
of the printers can do anything. Print jobs go, but the printer then pauses
with the report "/usr/lib/cups/filter/pstoraster failed".
I'm now desperate. There are so many things that depend on printing. What
could possibly be wrong?
