Receding Desktop: fc6t3 86x64 on MSI p965 neo
by Chuck Forsberg WA7KGX
Both text and normal graphic install fail to complete
"Loading ata_piix driver"
System has four SATA drives and an IDE DVD writer.
FWIW I haven't found a Linux that can deal with the
way MSI hacked the IDE bus. XP and Vista32 load
without problems but CDROM runs very slowly in XP.
I will take the box back to the dealer for a motherboard
swap or something. Nothing in the BIOS settings makes it better.

Latest update to Fc6 test3 causes screen lockup
by Arch Willingham
I have a Dell Inspiron 2200 laptop that I have been running via FC5, then Fc6 test2 and FC6 test3 . It works fine, at least until yesterday.
I did a bunch of YUMEX updates yesterday and later rebooted. The start up process all goes fine. It goes from character based to GUI, keeps going through different parts of the boot. The screen sort of changes to blue where it is supposed to go to the log-on screen and the whole thing freezes with a funky 1" x 1" block of white squiggles in the middle.I tried hitting 'ctrl-alt-F1' etc, it does not react to that. The computer keeps running because I can pull the wireless card out and the drive light starts blinking.
If, when it boots, I go to the grub process and get rid of "rhgb quiet" and change the line to say:
"kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.18-1.2689.fc6 ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00"
it will boot just fine.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

FC6T3 installation questions (Konqueror menus)
by Kwan Lowe
Hello all:
I've been trying out FC6T3 on a VMWare partition on an Intel Core 2 Duo.
Installation was unenventful except for a glitch with the IPV6 configuration
(existing bug). It *feels* quicker overall and almost everything "just worked".
One minor thing that didn't: fluxbox didn't install properly via yum. It was
choking on pyxdg and artwiz-aleczapka-fonts packages which I installed manually from
the development repository.
One nit in reqards to a KDE app...
In Konqueror, it seems that the width of the menus keeps on growing with each
iteration. For example, click on the "View" or "Settings" menu entry and you have to
move the pointer a couple inches of screen space to get to sub-menus. With a
trackpad this becomes annoying becomes you tend to touch the entries above or below
and this dismisses the submenu. Is it possible to edit the menus so the text (and
thus the menu width) is not so wide?

beagle 99% CPU for past hour
by Kwan Lowe
I noticed that the beagled process has been consuming 99% CPU for the past hour. I
finally killed it but am curious if this long run is normal.. I don't see any
relevant logs.

Xorg errors related to out of range
by Jim Cornette
I recently attempted to upgrade to FC6T3 on a Dell Computer with an
active Matrox video card as primary and with a secondary Nvidia video
card. The Graphical install failed due to the monitor being severely out
of range.
I then installed FC6T3 via the script due to some multimedia packages
which I'd rather keep intact.
The problem is with the installed version of X in rawhide now. This
version puts the monitor out of range when switching from the top
resolution to any of the lower resolutions.
I first noticed the out of range with the monitor problem when I
launched the game viruskiller. This game would put the monitor out of
range with the FC5 version of xorg.conf which was generated by
system-config-display. I then ran system-config-display --reconfig to
try to get a brand new configuration that might work better for the
changes in X. s-c-display failed to recognize my monitor type which it
recognized when ran in FC5. So I decided to run X -configure which
recognized both video cards, detected the correct monitor, but still has
the out of range errors. The out of reange errors are on the high side
and the values are different with each failure. They mostly range in the
high 90s to low 100s for both the vertical and horizontal failures.
Also, s-c-display only makes the screen resolution top out at 800x600
with 256 colors. The xorg.conf from running X -configure works at
1152x864 and allows lower resolution choices, though they cause the OOR
error.
Bug report filed:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=207804
What changes to X causes this behavior? Are the changes being reverted
or are the effects being remidied by forward changes?
Just joining in the Fun,
Jim

network-scripts/init.ipv6-global segfaults at startup/shutdown
by Leon Stringer
Hi,
After the latest update I the init.ipv6-global script hangs for a long
time (1 - 2 mins?) and then segfaults. This occurs at startup and shutdown.
I have two NICs only one of which is enabled. system-config-network
shows IPv6 is not running on this interface.
At startup I get:
/etc/rc5.d/S10network: line 54: 1519 Segmentation fault
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/init.ipv6-global start pre
/etc/rc5.d/S10network: line 54: 1519 Segmentation fault
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/init.ipv6-global start pre
I didn't see this on the list, is anyone else getting this?

acroread not working in FC6TEST3
by David Bentley
Just got round to testing some 3rd party software with FC6TEST3 and have found a problem with Adobe Acrobat reader.
It installs all OK but nothing happens when launched by clicking on a document or launching it from its menu icon. When I checked if it was actually running it appeared to be so I killed it and launched it from a terminal window (acroread) and after a short delay you get the following scrolling down the screen
expr: syntax error
|
expr: syntax error
I am just about to start debuging the file that launches acroread.
/usr/local/Adobe/Acrobat7.0/bin/acroread but can't so far spot where the error message is coming from.
Any idea why it isn't working would be great help.

Should i just wait til fc6t4??
by sean darcy
I've been unsuccessful in installing t3 from dvd on a
standard intel x86-64 chipset box. I think the problem is
that I have one partition ( not root ) that's lvm.
I asssume this will all be fixed for t4. Has anybody figured
out how to install before then?
