High definition video not working on Fedora 9?
by Valent Turkovic
Hi,
I have some high-def video trailers I downloaded via azureus and I
can't play them on F9 Preview (with all codecs installed).
I have been running Rawhide for some time now and when I saw this bug
I thought it could be something I did so I did a clean install of F9
Preview and installed fluendo codecs for totem, and also installed vlc
and mplayer (with codecs) from livna.
None player can play these mkv files that I can play without any
problems under Fedora 8 with all of mentioned video players.
I have Intel graphic chip:
Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated
Graphics Controller (rev 03)
To reproduce this bug do this:
1. yum install azureus
2. start azureus
3. download some high-def video trailer (Iron Man for example)
4. install video player + codecs (vlc, mplayer, totem + fluendo codecs
- take your pick)
5. play high-def video
I get these errors:
$ totem IronManTrailer2-1080p.mkv

http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Interviews/PreUpgrade
Will and Seth anything you would like to add to testers?
BTW. Great work guys :)
You can get preupgrade here...
http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/packageinfo?packageID=6045
or do..
koji download-build --arch=noarch preupgrade-0.9-2.fc8 ( fc9 for fc9 )
rpm -ihv preupgrade-0.9-2.fc8.noarch.rpm
If you have koji installed..
There's no use filing bugs just yet since this has not made it to the
components list
in bugzilla. ( correct me if I'm wrong I did not find it.. )
Claiming the first bug found :)

Can yum download to a pen-drive?
by Anne Wilson
On a laptop with the LiveCD install I have the problem that I can't network,
as the PCMCIA card is not recognised. I have since found that the LiveCD
itself can recognise and configure the card. That makes me wonder if I could
a) install downloadonly onto the RAM-drive
b) use downloadonly to yum the updates, saving them to a usb pen-drive
Any advice on how this might be done? Thanks
Anne

A good test of the F9pre-release would be to have livna and friends ready
by Leslie S Satenstein
Freshrpms, livna, et al need to be ready so we can do a full f9-prev test.
I guess I can butcher the livna.repro to point to the 8 subdirectory, but all livna has to do is provide a soft link accessable from the web.
Working lilly white slows things down. Fedora should be LillyWhite, but it would be nice to have livna ready for beta testing too.

coreutils is installed, cannot su -, and cannot add user still running as root
by Antonio Olivares
Dear all,
I have run the updates on this machine, the fedora 7
machine updated to rawhide. I cannot add users and
still cannot add users to troubleshoot errors.
[root@localhost ~]# system-config-users
The program 'system-config-users.py' received an X
Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadName (named color or font does not
exist)'.
(Details: serial 91 error_code 15 request_code 45
minor_code 0)
(Note to programmers: normally, X errors are
reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after
causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync
command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a
meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the
gdk_x_error() function.)

no printing with gnome print dialog
by Joe Smith
If I try to print from Firefox (i.e. File > Print), or any other
application that uses the new Gnome printer dialog (gedit, gimp), the
"Print" button is disabled. If I select "Print to file", the "Print"
button is enabled; switching back to an actual printer queue, it grays
out again.
Other apps that don't use the new dialog print just fine; CUPS is not
showing any errors.
Apps using (apparently) an older Gnome printing dialog, e.g.
Applications > Accessories > Dictionary are able to print.
Is there something I can try to figure out why the print button isn't
activated?

Naming convention for packages
by Dominik Sandjaja
Hi,
I was just wondering why the packages for Fedora 9 and even for Fedora
10 do have ".fc9" and ".fc10" in their names. Shouldn't it be ".f9" or,
as that may be too late already, at least ".f10"? Given that the "Core"
in the name was dropped quite a while ago ...
Just wondering.
Cheers,
Dominik

X fights Global Warming!

Just a quickie to note that since installing this morning's
xorg-x11-server-Xorg-1.4.99.901-23.20080415.fc9.x86_64 the cpu
temperature on my Core 2 Duo (with 965 chipset) running KDE has gone
down by 5 degrees!
Coincidence? I don't think so ...

Rawhide install report - qualified success
by G.Wolfe Woodbury
Did an install of Wednesday's rawhide (20080423) and can report a
qualified success. The only problem I had was getting the correct
method selected.
I added
"stage2=nfs:wolves.private:/srv/Fedora/development/i386/os/images/stage2.img"
and
"method=nfs:wolves.private:/srv/Fedora/development/i386/os/"
to the boot command line (using boot.iso) and it proceeded correctly to
the point of fetching the repodata. There it complained about not
finding the right name.
At htat point I chose to "Edit" and had to switch to an http: install
because an nfs: url wasn't accepted that late in the game. Thereafter
the install proceeded smothly and I now have FC9(rawhide) running on the
testbed machine.
Can someone point out where/why my method specification (above)
didn't/couldn't work? I've also tried "askmethod" in the stage2 spec
line and didn't get a dialog, just an error that let me edit and switch
to an http: method.
I will note that the http: method is apparently more robust and faster
that it was on previous releases. (I used to get timeouts and hangs with
the http: method.)
For my testbed 686 box, the release is shaping up nicely, and if the
LiveCD is any indication, the x86_64 should be okay also.
