Offer to help editors?
by Jonathan Roberts
Hi all,
A while back at a mktg meeting we talked about getting in touch with
the staff/editors at various Linux and computing magazines to ask how
we can make their lives easier, how we can make it easier for them to
find information about Fedora which can serve as the basis of a story.
I think this kind of dialog could be very productive, certainly I had
a good response from Joe (can't remember surname) from Linux Magazine
following a conversation along these lines. I've posted a draft of a
potential e-mail that could be sent out, but I want to get people's
opinions and permission before I do this!
---------------
Hi there,
I'm writing to you on behalf of the Fedora Project to ask how we can
help make your life a little easier.
Obviously as one of the leading GNU/Linux distributions, $publication
has covered us a number of times in the past, and will continue to do
so in the future. What we'd like to do is find out how you gather
information for the stories you write, and how that process can be
improved.
As a starting point, we'd like to point you at our feature list. Every
release this is created and maintained by our developers to provide
information about the features they're working on - both technical
implementation details, and also details on the potential impact for
end-users can be found here. We hope that this will not only improve
our internal co-ordination, but allow members of the press to get an
early look at technologies that will be significant over the coming
months. It can be found at the following web address:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Releases/#/FeatureList
Where # is the number of the release you're interested in.
One other important piece of documentation that you might like to be
aware of, and which might stand to make your life a little easier, is
that with every development release (alpha, beta etc) we create a
single page set of Release Notes that detail how the features detailed
on the feature list are coming together at that particular point in
time. This can be found at:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Releases/#/$MileStone/ReleaseNotes
Where # is the number of the release you're interested in, and
$MileStone is the formal title of the mile stone you're interested in,
such as alpha or beta.
I hope you find this information useful. If you have any suggestions
on how you'd like to see these resources improved or what new
resources you'd like to see created (or any other reason, for that
matter), please don't hesitate to contact us and we'll see what we can
do to help.
Yours kindly,
-----------------------------------------
Best wishes,
Jon

Fedora 9 Preview Review
by Rahul Sundaram
Hi,
http://www.montanalinux.org/fedora-9-preview-review.html
"One new feature that I am excited about is the LiveUSB with persistant
data. While the ability to create a LiveUSB stick from the LiveCD media
has been a feature of Fedora for a while, the ability to have persitant
data is new. For more info on that, see the interview with Jeremy Katz
in Red Hat Magazine. I originally thought that the persistant data
feature was only for user data but as it turns out it applies to the
complete system... so not only can you store your documents... but you
can also install updates, new applications, create accounts, and save
settings. There is nothing special you have to do... it works just like
a hard drive would."
"This is the first release of FreeIPA so it currently isn't feature
complete but they do have a roadmap. This sounds a lot like a Linux
alterative to Microsoft's Active Directory although it is NOT trying to
be a clone of Active Directory. As you would expect it is powered by a
number of server applications including Fedora Directory Server"

Two Weeks with Fedora 9
by Rahul Sundaram
Hi,
http://blogs.eweek.com/brooks/content/linux/two_weeks_with_fedora_9.html
"As I mentioned above, it was Fedora 9's support of USB stick-based
persistent LiveCD deployments that enticed me to download the
in-development distro, and when I tried it out for myself it worked
great. Fedora 9 booted up from the 2GB USB stick I used, and, through
the virtue of solid state, did so a lot more quickly than CD-based
LiveCD images do. I used the my portable Fedora 9 system to browse the
Internet, I downloaded some things, and I installed a piece of software,
too. I tried rebooting the system, and, sure enough, the changes I'd
made did persist"

A Preview Of Kernel-Based Mode-Setting
by Rahul Sundaram
Hi,
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=kernel_modesetting&num=1
".. One of the features that has risen towards the top of the list and
delivers visible benefits to the end-user is kernel-based mode-setting.
As implied by its name, kernel mode-setting involves moving the
mode-setting code for video adapters from the user-space X server
drivers into the Linux kernel. This may seem like an uninteresting topic
for end-users, but having the mode-setting done in the kernel allows for
a cleaner and richer boot process, improved suspend and resume support,
and more reliable VT switching (along with other advantages)"
"Kernel mode-setting isn't yet in the mainline Linux kernel nor is the
API for it frozen, but Fedora 9 shipping next month will be the first
major distribution carrying this initial support."

5 Reasons You'll Love Fedora 9
by Jonathan Roberts
I had some spare time and a few requests to fulfill, so with the
slipped final release date of Fedora 9 I put together this short blog
post about Fedora 9 and why you'll love it.
I've tried to write it as blatant digg fodder, even making it a "x
reasons you'll love" post, and being very careful to point out all the
contributions made by Fedora developers upstream.
http://jonrob.wordpress.com/2008/04/19/5-reasons-why-youll-love-fedora-9/
Read it there, and if you like it and think it does a good job for
marketing, digg it here:
http://digg.com/linux_unix/5_Reasons_You_ll_Love_Fedora_9
I don't know if Matthias reads this list, but he was my motivation for
writing this as I didn't manage to get the interview about X RandR
support done in time, and with the Ubuntu release coming soon I wanted
to "claim credit" as he'd suggested in one form or another :)
Best wishes,
Jon

Podcast People
by Jonathan Roberts
Hey,
A while ago I said I'd get in touch with various technology and Linux
related podcasts to try and arrange a few interviews for Fedora
people. Before I actually contact podcasts though, I thought it would
be a good idea to get a list of people who'd be interested in talking
on them!
Mairin did a great job on the Linux Action Show :) Is anybody inspired
by this and would like to take a crack too? Does anybody know where I
can post to try and get more attention? I'll be putting it on my blog
so we'll see if I can get any feed back that way.
Best wishes all,
Jon
