Fedora taps Zarafa open source groupware for 13
By Paula Rooney
Fedora’s selection of Zarafa as an open source groupware component in
Fedora 13 is very interesting.
The beta of Fedora 13, code named “Goddard,” was made available on April
13. The final version is expected in mid May.
Red Hat sponsors the open source Linux project and has toyed with the
idea of integrating email and calendaring capabilities into its Linux
stack from time to time. Novell, of course, promotes its own GroupWise
but also endorses other open source offerings for its Linux distribution.

Keyword Optimization on FP / Self-Introduction: Garland Binns
by Garland Binns
Hi Everyone,
My name is Garland. I've been looking through fedoraproject.org and I
noticed that there isn't a ton of keyword optimization. There definitely
appears to be a lot of potential for increasing our rank and penetration
within the search engines, hence, bringing us more relevant traffic and
potential users/contributors. For example, the core pages that appear in the
top left of the home page (Home, Get Fedora, Join Fedora, Help) all have the
same title tag and no meta description - they also don't appear to be
well-optimized for any keywords other than the phrase Fedora Project. By
changing this not only could we increase exposure by inserting additional
highly sought after keywords, this would also give us the opportunity for
these main pages to appear independently on the same page of search results,
giving us more page share leaving less room for other results that could be
siphoning potential visitors.
Just the word "linux" alone, has many variants that are currently generating
hundreds of thousands of searches each month. With a little work we could
start taking advantage of this:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1673758/linux_keyword_ideas_20100420_1535408.csv
Here is another spreadsheet which also has many variants:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1673758/linux_distro_keyword_ideas_20100420_17398...
Just the term "linux iso" is used approximately 200,000 times in searches
worldwide each month. These are people that already know how to create discs
to distribute. We are nowhere to be found on any of the search engines
because none of our pages are optimized for this term.
Wouldn't it be a good thing if people were able to see a link to Get Fedora
when they were searching for a linux iso?
I would love to collaborate and join the Marketing Team to come up with a
plan for taking advantage of these opportunities.
With that said, here's my Mad Lib:
Hi, my name is Garland Binns and I live in Chicago, IL. My Fedora Account
System (FAS) username is gbinns, and my IRC nick is gbinns.
I learned about the Fedora Marketing team through the Websites Team, and am
interested in joining because I'm a full time Internet marketing
professional, web developer, and project manager.
This is the first FOSS project I have worked on, however, I've administered
and implemented many different marketing projects and programs in the past
in other arenas, specifically related to email, SEO, SEM, SMM. and the
Internet.
My skills, which I hope to utilize in Fedora Marketing, include:
(Marketing Skills) - Email/SEO/SEM/SMM
(Other Skills) - Project Management/Web Design/Web Development
I'd also like to learn more about Linux-based programming languages.
When I'm not working on Fedora, I am working full-time at Media Rake, Inc.,
which is a company that helps businesses grow online.
A couple of goals I have for the Fedora Project are expanding its reach to
convert people to Fedora like myself, who have frequently relied on Windows
and OSX in the past when it comes to computing, and seeing Fedora become the
number one distro on the Internet.
I am wondering if I can join the Marketing Team.
Please help me get started!
Sincerely,
Garland

Re: In the news: Zarafa
by Jan Wildeboer
As long as it doesn't becom Fedora investing time and ressources on
correcting and defending openCore companies, fine with me.
I still would advice Zarafa to call the opensource version different. Makes
all of our lives easier. But that is mid-term and up to Zarafa. Short term
we should try to set it right where needed by commenting and talking to
authors of articles.
But we should focus more on the true goodies of Fedora. Zarafa is - as you
said - only one of them.

Harm? This sounds dramatized. Fedora is in the press with zarafa as a
feature
- and we disussed pro and contra already a lot.
It is easy to oppose and disagree on new contributions - i know that it is
part of your job at Red Hat to be a "pain" to non-FOSS Vendors ;) - but
Fedora
is about enable and encourage people to contribute and i want to see that
Press, Users, - the world - get the right message - i already explained in
detail why it is good that a community driven feature should advertised [1]
Clarification and truth have nothing to do with harming - it is about
enlighten
them and evangelize them to spread it right. We talk about FOSS Software
here
and it seems Paul clarified things already to the author.

Now I am not in the "told you so" department, but it unfolds as I expected.
Not much we can do now without harming either Fedora or Zarafa.
Maybe Zarafa can think of renaming the open source edition just as fedora v
RHEL?

So, Zarafa is getting a lot of press attention:
http://blogs.zdnet.com/open-source/?p=6298
some of it is fairly unflattering:
http://itmanagement.earthweb.com/osrc/article.php/3877446/Fedora-13-Beta-...
I'm a bit uncomfortable with this myself; the availability of Zarafa in
Fedora seems to be being read in ways in which we certainly didn't
intend it (as an aspect of commercialization, as some kind of Red
Hat-parachuted feature and hence an indication of RH's future
directions, etc).
I'm wondering if perhaps we should pull Zarafa's mention as a 'feature'
of Fedora 13, or if not that, then certainly develop a more coherent
story about its inclusion, what it's for, why it's in Fedora, and the
whole 'open core' angle on it...
What do people think?

Google Adwords - not sure if off-topic
by Nelson Marques
I had a small chat with a close friend of mine that is Marketing
Director in an Italian group represented in Portugal.
We had some weird talk about Adword, and it actually I've seen some
very weird stats. I've never worked with Adwords before, I am not even
aware if Fedora does it, but this was interesting to analyse.
They bought some words on adwords and placed a small budget. They
bought their usual words, and the most fun part, their competitors
words. Strangely, they got roughly 40% of the hits incoming from
searches from their competitors. For their case, that strategy seems to
work fine (Ceramic Industry).
Not sure if the same could apply to us, or even if we use adwords, in
case we do and are not exploring it that way, I would suggest a test on
it for some "relevant" statistical data.
Just a thought...

Looks like you're off to a great start. :)
Since the rest of the Allegheny students will probably be working and
asking questions in #fedora-mktg at that time, might I suggest holding
the interview in #fedora-meeting-1?
This is because #fedora-meeting is going to be taken by the BugZapper
team, according to https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Meetings, and so that
you can use zodbot (https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Zodbot) to log the
